Sheer awesomeness I tell you! I recieved my 96/11 from Classic Arms on Friday 04/05/2013...reasonably fast shipping. Saturday morning I took her apart... Cleaned and oiled her... And it was off to the range. Due to the fact I don't own a decent camera I couldn't make a proper YouTube video review. However my buddy did video tape me shooting the 96/11 at the range.. So I included a link. The action on this baby.. Is pretty slick! I already own a K31 and 1911 Long rifle... Now all I need is the 1911 Carbine and the model 1889 to complete my Swiss rifle collection. Buy one while you can! It appears they only have 3 left!!!

Well all I have to say is that again Classic Firearms delivered the goods! And, they delivered one nice Swiss rifle to me, with a leather sling. About the rifle, what more can I say that I haven't already said in other Swiss K31, and Swiss K11 reviews here. The rifle is beautiful! All numbers match, it's in great shape, and it's another Swiss masterpiece, that I will enjoy for the rest of my life. Now, I'lol have to get the antique Schimdt-Rubin and I'll have an almost complete collection. Thanks again to Classic Firearms for giving me a chance of collecting these beauties at a very reasonable price. Ordered this rifle worried that I would end up with a rusted metal and chewed up stock beater rifle, and what I received was a rifle with no beaver chew and very good looking metal, stock had very few minor handling mark, and as an added bonus it had the tag under the buttplate with the last soldiers name on it who carried it. Great job Classic keep finding the surplus rifles please.

I got one of the last of these rifles, the bottom of the barrel so to speak.
5 minutes after my order, they were sold out.
So my expectations were appropriately moderated.

What I received was a gorgeous 1899 beauty. It is easily the longest rifle in my collection, and it just demands attention. What a looker!
It has the character of a rifle that has been the loved and taken care of by many a Swiss solder. It is my honor to take care of it now.

This was my first purchase from Classic and my first C&R purchase, as well. I was a skeptical about how this purchase would play out because, despite a lot of research indicated that a Swiss rifle is an excellent weapon with little to fear, I had zero experience with older weapons.

Everything turned out better than expected! The quality of this rifle is eternal. It shoots straight with ease. This is the first rifle I have owned meant for 300m+ shooting and even I was pinging steel on the local 300y range within a few trigger pulls.

The only reason I gave this 4 out of 5 starts was because, despite paying extra for hand select, the stock had a very new, large gouge on one side. It is unfortunate and does detract from the rifle's aesthetic value, but I bought it to be a shooter and it accomplished that goal with aplomb.

I've been interested in the Swiss straight pulls for awhile now. Don't know why I put this purchase off but I did. Very happy with the addition of the 96/11. Really just a fine built rifle. It handles and operates much easier than I thought. That old saying "they don't make em like they used to" holds true in this case.

I always thought these rifles were cool, so decided I better order one up while I could. Received my first K1911 from Classic firearms and the stock was broken clean in half right at the pistol grip. Sent an email with pictures to sales and they said just to ship it back for a replacement. Returned the broken stock rifle back and a couple weeks later received the replacement.

Both rifles I received were in really good shape. Clean stocks, bluing looks good, and nice clean actions. Just looked up the serial number on mine and looks like it was manufactured back in 1917.

I am very happy with the purchase and the customer service from Classic Firearms. Now just need to get some ammo and go do some shooting!

Nice Private Series Rifle

I got the 1896/11 rifle and its my second one. It is all matching (Bolt, recvr, barrel, magazine) in great shape and came with a muzzle protector, and a braided sling. The stock has some minor dings but is beautiful. The rifle is a Private series rifle. The P is in the same line as the serial number (serial number directly follows the P. on the same line).

When the P stamp is above or below the serial number P is followed by a 2 digit number the rifle was given to the soldier when he retired (in the year indicated by the 2 digits following the P).

I'm still researching it but have read when the P is followed by the serial number (all on the same line) the rifle was manufactured for Private sale and never went to the military. These do not seem very common and I'm still researching it.

I am very happy with this rifle which is in great shape for a rifle over a century in age.

First off, great shipping time, even with the delay took less than a week. Once again classic is great to work with, fast and prompt. Rifle was pretty clean, just some old storage grease. The stock had a few smaller blemishes, but nothing bad, The bluing was about 85-90% but I didn't choose hand select so no complaints. Bore is clean and strong, action needed some oil but now its pretty smooth. defiantly turned heads at the FFL. Thanks again classic!

I have been a Classic customer for years with 100% satisfaction on a variety of firearms and accessories. I've seen the Swiss guns go in and out of stock and kept saying "one of these days...". Well one of these days was last Thursday and I am now asking myself what were you waiting for??? Duh!
Mine is a 1900 and right off the bat I felt like I was handling a fine watch or other work of art. The bluing is mostly perfect but with some wear in the expected areas.The stock had the expected nicks and dings and one pretty good scratch about 3 " long near the butt. Turns out Minwax English Chestnut is a perfect match for my stock and after my normal disassemble ,clean and BLO routine that baby was lookin' good and ready for action!!
Today was a beautiful late summer type day in middle TN and I busted out of work a couple hours early to put her thru her paces. My first shot at paper at 30 yds was about an inch high of my POA and I got all froggy and sent one 130yds downrange at a 12' gong. Pa-DING!!!!. Not bad for a new gun, open sights, old eyes combo. I proceeded to spend the rest of my session wearing out various steel targets at intermediate ranges. Now I know what Swiss shooters have been raving about.
It's an understatement to say I am satisfied . This one is a 10 star keeper1

Exceptional Rifle

I've purchased several firearms of various makes from classic, and have bought more from local gun shops. This rifle is far and away in the best condition I've ever seen for a curio and relic. The wood has only minor dents, little to know darkening or wear of the finish. The bore is clean and sharp, no noticeable throat erosion. The bluing is exceptionally clean with no discernible wear. All parts match. All this on a rifle that dates back to 1899 (by serial number).

To top it all off my rifle came with a sling.

Five stars hands-down. Hand pick really came through this time.

Ordered a S-R 96/11 from Classic on 9/7/16 and picked up the rifle on 9/13. I was initially apprehensive to order "sight unseen" and so I used the hand pick option. I am really glad I did. The rifle I received is just beautiful- no rust, great bluing, and a beautiful stock with some dents but no cracks, gouges, or beaver chews! The rifle came with a sling and muzzle cover, which I very much appreciate! The rifling is strong and looks new. Receiver serial numbers indicate a 1901 manufacture date for the original 1896 rifle. Of course the bolt and magazine serial numbers are different as they correspond to the 1911 upgrade and indicate a 1916 manufacture date.

Dealing with Classic Firearms was so smooth! The product price was fantastic, they take credit cards, and shipping was very reasonable! I also ordered ammo and a field maintenance kit and it was shipped with the rifle at no extra cost! Also, if you register one of their approved FFLs in your account data, Classic handles everything! Checkout process was just so easy.

Swiss rifles are rather known for having rough stocks due to the birch they used and that they actually trained with them. Mine the stock has the normal complement of dings, scrapes, and gouges. The metal is about ninety percent blued which really stands out looking at the wood as like almost the stock was off another rifle. However all the serial numbers match including that of the stock. It even had the toe tag of the man who used it under the butt plate. The bore was shinny as well. The plastic cocking handle is worn and cracked but their plastic wasn't that good back then. Mine came with a sling that is still useable. Overall I am well pleased with the purchase and looking forward to firing it. The only reason I didn't rate it a five is the stock. However for what I know of this kind of rifle it is in excellent for one of them. I would buy another.

Great 1896/11

When I received my 1896/11 I was in disbelief (received 4-29-16). The hand select option was no longer in effect and I thought the odds of receiving a really nice one was slim. I was wrong! This thing was really nice - no beaver chew what so ever, with only a couple of deep dents in the stock which steamed out pretty well, and the blue was 90% plus. I am a very happy camper. Get one of these for your collection while they last.

Ive always been interested in these Swiss rifles, but only recently decided I had to have one. Was looking for a K31 or K11 originally, but decided to go with the 1896/11 for the longer barrel as I planned on this being a "long range" rifle for me.

As usual I received mine quickly from Classic. Overall I'm extremely impressed with the condition of mine! I would say its a solid 90%, with an excellent stock, with no sign of any beaver chew. Blueing is essentially 100% on my rifle, and was very clean upon delivery. Checked but did not have a troop tag under the butt plate. Mine did come with a sling, but the stitching was falling apart on it, so I replaced it with a surplus HK G3 sling. Ran the serial numbers on mine and it dates to 1915, however the stock and magazine have separate numbers that dated back to 1899! Magazine was force matched to the "new" serial number on the receiver and barrel. All of the metal work is in excellent shape on mine and the rifle appears to have either been arsenal refinished at some point or just very lightly used.

GP11 7.5x55 ammo has basically dried up, and the little bit Ive seen at gunshows and Gunbroker has been prohibitively expensive. Ive ran Privi Partisan commercial ammo through it instead without issue. Ive ventured into rifle reloading with the 7.5x55 round as well, so the Privi Partisan ammo that Classic sells is a good choice if you want a good source of reusable brass for your rifle.

I decided with this rifle that I wanted to try "long range" shooting with it, and to that purpose I've installed a Swiss Products steel "clamp on" scope mount (screws into the magwell with no modification to the rifle) and a Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40 scope. Havent gotten it quite zeroed in yet, but overall I am pleased with the combo.

While some will point out that these Swiss rifles have no war history and limited historic value because of it, I look at them instead as an excellent historic example of the quality of Old World craftmanship and attention to detail. These rifles are over a 100 years old, have a still rather unique and quick cycling bolt action, a free floating barrel, and a level of fit and finish that is simply unheard of or quite simply impossible at the price point that you can get these for today.

While the ammo is somewhat hard to find, it is easily reloadable (if you buy new commerical ammo (GP11 is berdan primed and not easily reloadable), and uses extremely common 308 projectiles. I would not hesitate to recommend one of these rifles to anyone looking for a historic surplus rifle with a level of build quality far above a Mosin, but for just a little more money. Get one while you still can!

I wanted to thank William and the rest of the crew at Classicfirearms for the great 96/11 I just received. The rifle I got was made in 1899 and has all matching serial numbers, original sling and the troop tag. Very nice bore and bolt assembly and probably 80% blue. A few dings and scratches and some rust on the butt plate but it buffed up pretty good. I have no point of comparison but for a 117 year old firearm I would say its in great condition and I plan on taking it to the range once I locate some ammo. This gun is going into a display case with my Swiss Grandfathers Military jacket, hat and shooting medals and I will be proud to display it.

Great Rifle at a Great Price

1896/11 Swiss Rifle- My daughter opened the box and took pix of it for me and looked over the rifle real good. It looks beautiful. I have quite a few K-31's (5 I think) and two long 1911 Swiss rifles. This rifle is all matching and looks better than the two 1911's I have (one of which I may have gotten from Classic, I can't remember). It came with a sling even though it was not guaranteed to have one. From the serial number the rifle was made in 1905. This is the oldest rifle I have and for a 111 year old rifle it looks fantastic. The bolt handle was not chipped or cracked which amazed me as they often have a chip out of them or a crack in these old rifles. The bore is mirror bright and shiny. The metal looked great with no rust and just a little bluing wore off the end of the barrel and some other high points etc. No rust anywhere on the rifle. The stock was in great shape (no cracks that I can see) and in much better shape than some of the beaver chewed beech stock K-31's I have. Even my 01 dealer commented on how great this rifle looked for its age. He was amazed at it and was thinking of getting one for himself. This rifle was without the handpick option which makes it even more amazing.

I recently purchased a 96/11 after recieving my C&R, I was a little nervous about buying sight unseen but after reading the reviews I decided to give it a go. I couldnt be happier with the rifle, the fit and finish is great and other than the trigger group all of the numbers match. The bore is mirror bright and the stock shows very minimal wear, certainly better than I expected for a 105 year old rifle. I wasnt fortunate enough to get a sling but thats not a big deal to me. Looking forward to spring so I can take it out and send some rounds down range, I have no doubt it will be a good shooter as long as I do my part.

Over 100 years old and still amazing

When I ordered this rifle I was not expecting to receive such a well preserved historical item. Yes there are some dings and scratches in the stock, yes there are signs of age on the metal and wood, however, I have not found any rust. In all honesty my Swiss 96/11 is in the same, if not better shape then many of the military surplus rifles on the market. The condition is not like some nearly perfect, or unissued surplus rifles, yet it is still in overall good condition.

The bore on my Swiss 96/11 is amazing! The action is slick, the stock is functionally solid and this rifle was made over 100 years ago. How many folks can say that they have a working 100 year old rifle? Not many. Just the cool factor of pulling one of these rifles out of the safe and showing it off is well worth the cost.

There are many reasons to purchase guns. Some firearms are for practical purposes such as hunting, competition shooting and self defense. Other firearms are sought after as collectors items and some are also investments. Personally I purchased my Swiss 96/11 as an investment. It is well worth noting that not nearly as many Swiss 96/11 rifles were made in comparison to other military arms of the same era from other countries.

By the way my rifle came with a leather sling dated 1908. Over all all I can say is, what a great investment.

wow! where to start? my search for a 96/11 began several months ago. I finally narrowed my search to two rifles. one was on gun broker the other on simpsons LTD. I have heard of classic firearms from the gun boards site so I decided to check it out. watched a few video's and read reviews. but I was discontent with the fact that I like to see what I'm buying. I emailed classic on a Friday stating my concern. Monday I received a reply from William, he told me his pickers would pick me a nice rifle. so I began the purchase. I did not have a copy of my c&r license on file so another great person (Janet) helped me after hours to complete the purchase. this was on Monday and the rifle arrived on Friday. I was impressed to say the least! when I took the rifle from the box I couldn't believe the outstanding condition it was in. mint perfect bore and 99% blue. stock was very good and only few minor dings. if you are leery about buying sight unseen just ask classic to pick you a nice one and they will. I did shoot the rifle with my hand loads. and if I could put any negative down it would be that the rifle shoots 12 inches high at 100 yards. but the sight is set for 300 meters so to be expected. also I might add that the trigger pull is the best in the house and I have a bunch of military rifles. you just cannot buy this type of quality for $300 any more. buy one!!

I received my 1896/11 today and it is definitely a nice addition to my collection. Dating the rifle, it dates back to 1901. How solid the action and rifle itself are for it's age is unreal. I showed some family and they could hardly believe how old the rifle is. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because there's no troop tag behind the plate which is no big deal, and a sling swivel is missing. For as old as this is and being one of the last ones available on the site though I am more than satisfied. Thanks Classic Firearms!

Being a rifle that had modifications done to the stock, I was really surprised at the quality of the work. The rifle shoots straight and though a little heavy, I really enjoy shooting it especially from a rifle rest. Shooting at 150 yds resulted in pretty tight groupings just a little high. Very happy with the purchase.

This is like brand new with a very fine beech stock. No dents or dings. As advertised, you can see where the Swiss spliced-in / modified the pistol grip onto the stock. My father-in-law, a tool and die maker, did woodworking for a hobby - - he would say the pistol grip modification was quality craftsmanship. The bluing was probably 98 percent and was touched-up with some Eastwood's Metal Blackening solution. Since I put it all over the metal, again, it brings out the blue-green color of the receiver even more. When they say these have a new barrel installed; that is an understatement ! This shiny barrel is deadly accurate on targets at less than 100 meters, even though the sight starts calibration at 300 meters. The troop tag was there behind the butt stock plate. This Schmidt-Rubin Model 1896 / 11 did not come with a sling, but the new sling I put on it dresses this venerable rifle like it is brand new. Fun to shoot and really gets a lot of attention at the range. Thanks again, Classic !

I was a little nervous ordering from classic again I felt like I got burned on their Beretta 92s deal as mine was heavily worn and couldn't exchange because they sold out quickly, however my faith was restored and I was pleasantly surprised when my 96/11 showed up. Rifle is in great condition, I would assume it was arsenal refinished in Switzerland because the bolt knob looks brand new as apposed to the usual hairline cracks and chips usually present, all matching numbers date the rifle to 1910 production including the sling. I have owned many surplus firearms in my life and this was the first time I have ever used the hand select option and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Shot 30 rounds of GP11 through it and it was dead on, there is a rumor going around on the web that these cannot safely chamber GP11 WHICH IS COMPLETELY FALSE AS THE /11 DESIGNATION SAFELY ALLOWS THE USE OF GP11. I just hope the 1911 rifles stay in stock long enough for me to order one of those too. 5 stars

Bottom of the barrel?

Maybe at the bottom of the barrel on these. I paid extra for hand select for exterior cosmetics and got a rifle that looks pretty good on one side and has three 4 inch long, deep scratches on the other side of the butt stock. One of the scratches runs over two dime sized divots in the stock that apparently predate the scratches, and are deep enough that rough bare unfinished wood is showing. Another of the scratches runs through the stamped shield and cross on the butt stock. Very noticeable damage. A couple of inch long ragged gouges on other parts of the stock. Finish is worn off in several places. It did polish up a bit with some Murphy's Oil soap and the damage is less noticeable from a distance, depending on the viewing angle, but immediately apparent on close, cursory inspection and when handling the rifle. The upper hand guard is warped and there is a noticeable lip on both sides that runs almost the entire length of the hand guard. Bolt handle is in good shape but was poking through a hole worn in the bubble wrap when the rifle was delivered. Blue is maybe 50-60%. There are a few rust spots on the barrel near the sight, and the sight and sight base, which has no bluing at all left on it. I paid for matching numbers and the barrel, receiver, bolt and magazine match. It came with a sling. No troop tag under the butt plate. Bore looks good, but I have not had a chance to clean it yet. Some dings and roughness on the outside of the crown that shouldn't effect accuracy. Definitely does not match the glowing descriptions from earlier sellers, but should be a good shooter. Would have to refinish the stock to address most of the damage, but I prefer keeping things as original as possible. IF this is hand select, there must be some pretty rough rifles in this batch.

I originally ordered what was likely the last of the latest batch 1911s. Unfortunately the charging handle was broken prior to receipt but Classic accepted the return and credited me back with no issues.

Since the 1911s were gone, I decided to order an 1896/11. I believe from serial number mine is a 1904. It came with a sling and no rust... bluing is very worn in spots but all metal is in great shape. Bore is mirror bright and strong. Bolt looks brand new and action is extremely tight and smooth. Stock shows some dents but is a deep, beautiful, tiger-striped walnut. Beautiful rifle...

I was SO surprised at the rifle I received! I was kind of leery about ordering a firearm that I couldn't look at first, but I'm so glad I did! This rifle doesn't look 20 years old, let alone 97!! The stock has a bit of wear, marks and dents, but nothing that even messed up the finish. The bluing is great, only worn where it would be expected. All numbers matched, even the magazine! There also is a piece of paper under the butt plate that has the name, town, rank and unit of the original owner. I have recommended Classic on the Facebook curio and relic groups that I'm in. My next purchase from Classic will be a K31.

Quality for your cash

I've been buying Swiss rifles for a while and have come to expect nothing but quality from their surplus. The wood on these rifles are in great shape considering the age, minor wear shows the true history of these rifles. The bluing on the metal is usually evenly worn and developing a nice patina. The bore, once cleaned/degreased is like new and often mint.

Real talk on the rifle I received from Classic, decent wood, average bluing and it included a sling. Not sure the handpick was worth the extra price and the way the market is, shipping time left a bit to be desired. All in all, for the price this is a very nice addition to my collection. I will keep Classic on my list of distributors.

I purchased one of these a couple weeks and paid for the hand select. I am VERY happy with my purchase. This weapon is in FABULOUS shape and well worth the expense (which was a great deal to begin with). Man can those Swiss make a fine weapon. I am eagerly awaiting for the K11 to come back in stock to round out my 7.5mm collection. Thanks Classic Arms for the easy sale and outstanding quality...AGAIN! You all rock!

Amazingly, Classic packed and shipped in 1 day from when I placed the order. I requested hand selection and wow what a great rifle. Don't know if this is typical for these guns but it looks barely used. All the serial numbers match, excellent condition throughout. No complaints cosmetically or mechanically. Looking forward to the firing range.

Very happy with my 96/11. Gun is in great shape. Can't wait to shoot it. Service was A-1 from the sales staff and gun came very well-packed. Just placed my next order.
