SOG

Studies and Observations Group was established on January 24, 1964, as a joint-service U.S. special operations unit focused on unconventional warfare during the Vietnam War. Comprised of elite personnel from Army Special Forces, Navy SEALs, Air Force, Marine Corps, and CIA, the group conducted highly classified missions including deep reconnaissance, prisoner rescues, psychological operations, and sabotage across Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. SOG’s operations were pivotal in targeting the Ho Chi Minh Trail and gathering critical intelligence, often operating behind enemy lines with a high degree of risk and secrecy. With a peak strength of approximately 2,500 American and 7,000 Southeast Asian personnel, the unit’s legacy is marked by its adaptability and influence on modern special operations.
