The term Ghost Gun may be new to you, but if you've been following our posts and blogs, you'll be surprised that you already know what they are. Does the term "80 Percent" sound familiar? For the most part that is what a Ghost Gun is.

THE LAW

As Americans, we have been making our own firearms for centuries. We recognize this tradition and freedom as part of our Constitutional rights as described in the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment's guarantee to American Citizens to keep and bear arms also affords individuals the right to make their own firearms, according to legal scholars. The sale and control of firearms in the U.S. has been tediously regulated by federal law for the past 50 years. As regulated as firearms are in Our Country, it is surprising that it's still completely legal to make and own a homemade gun. That includes making a gun from scratch, or finishing twenty percent of a gun. These guns do not have to be serialized, registered, obtain a license, or even pass a background check. An individual cannot, however, sell homemade guns. If you make a gun for profit, as opposed to for personal use, you must obtain a federal firearms license (FFL) and serialize the guns that you sell.

80 PERCENT LOWER In the above paragraph, I mentioned "finishing" 20 percent of a gun. In effect, I am alluding to an 80% receiver. An 80% lower
is simply an unfinished receiver that has not yet reached the stage of manufacturing that meets the definition of a firearm, frame, or receiver. These unfinished receivers require some work at home. Purchasing a finished receiver, on the other hand, is the same as purchasing a gun. The receiver is considered a gun, it has a serial number, and the buyer must go through all background checks and register the receiver as if they had purchased a finished firearm.

  POLYMER 80 Polymer 80
is a frame that is 80% complete. Again, perfectly legal. Just like the 80% lower receivers, 80% polymer frames are not considered firearms because they have not yet reached the stage of manufacturing to be considered a firearm.

SUM IT UP

Although not a term recognized in law, Ghost Guns are legal to make for personal use. A firearm build is much more than just a frame or lower receiver. It's very special to make a firearm as the attachment to your build becomes personal. Each and every part has to be perfect and you will know your gun inside and out. Purchasing 80% lower receivers and/or a Polymer 80 offers a great foundation to start your build. The cost is low and these items can be delivered right to your front door. You do not need a background check, and you won't have to go through an FFL to take possession of your parts. Check out Classic Firearms Offerings of parts for your build, we've got you covered!
