Chinese Type 54 Tokarev Pistol - C&R Eligible
This is the legal definition of pistol, and in the United States, a pistol can be an automatic handgun, a single shot handgun, or a derringer style pistol. The term pistol came from the late 1500s and was originally a term to describe both small guns and small knives. As we know now, the name is exclusively reserved for handguns these days.
The Semantics
So if the term pistol encompasses all these different types of handguns, why aren't the terms synonyms? Well, we are leaving out one kind of handgun, and that's revolvers. Revolvers are not considered pistols, but they are considered handguns. A revolver does not have a fixed chamber that is permanently aligned with the bore. Revolvers have multiple chambers that rotate with each round, and this allows revolvers to sit outside the definition of pistols. The ATF defines a revolver as: The term "Revolver" means a projectile weapon of the pistol type, having a breechloading chambered cylinder so arranged that the cocking of the hammer or movement of the trigger rotates it and brings the next cartridge in line with the barrel for firing. Pistols encompass a variety of different handguns, although the semi-automatic is the most common, as are the single shot and derringer. Pistol is a term that can also be applied to lever action handguns, pump-action handguns, bolt action handguns, and even AR and AK type handguns. Revolvers only encompass revolvers and pepperbox designs. That being said, all the aforementioned different types of pistols and revolvers are all handguns and regulated as such. Handguns are typically regulated more than rifles and shotguns, and most laws make no distinction between revolvers and pistols. In fact, many people will often refer to revolvers as pistols because the two are so similar. Pistol, revolver, and handgun are all terms that define a small weapon without a stock. Regardless of which type of handgun you are looking for though, we are bound to have it. From Glocks to Colts and even AR-type pistols, Classic Firearms has you covered.
