Best Concealed Carry Positions Fall 2023

Best Concealed Carry Positions

As we all start to dress a bit warmer, added layers can improve concealment and reduce printing - even when toting a full-size handgun. This makes it easier to carry comfortably without letting others know that you are armed. Here are a few solid options to enhance your cool-weather EDC.

Paddle Holster (OWB)

An outside-the-waistband paddle holster may not spring to mind when you think "concealment," but a design that rides tight and close to the body can be one of the most convenient ways to carry in colder months. We like the Galco Speed Master 2.0 because it's fast and easy to put on / remove at the 3 o'clock position, yet stays securely in place when moving. Just throw on a heavy flannel shirt or a coat and you're all set.

Shoulder Holster

Since it isn't unusual to wear a jacket during fall and winter months, it's the perfect time to try out a shoulder rig. A setup with a holster, magazine pouch, and adjustable harness will allow you to carry your firearm and spare ammo with you using one simple system. These rigs also distribute weight evenly across the shoulders, so they're excellent for people who experience limited mobility or pain in their back.

Appendix Holster (AIWB)

Inside-the-waistband carry at the 1 o'clock position allows quick access to your firearm while still taking advantage of the ability to conceal a larger handgun under cool weather dress. It is faster than drawing from an IWB rig at the 3-5 o'clock position and although it is slightly slower than a paddle holster, AIWB carry also has the lowest potential for printing. After all, concealed means concealed no matter the time of year.

Small Of Back Holster

Whereas traditional small of back holsters are somewhat bulky and obtrusive, modern canted holsters worn at the 5 o'clock position offer similar functionality (utilizing the natural pocket of space at the back for added concealment) with unrivaled comfort and a low profile that practically disappears beneath outerwear. The Bianchi Allusion Assent is a sleek belt slide holster with a slight forward cant, making it an ideal choice for carrying at the (almost) small of back position.

Inside The Waistband (IWB)

Cool weather carry doesn't necessarily mean you have to switch to an OWB holster if that's not your thing. A canted IWB holster at the 4 o'clock position allows you to keep your EDC gear somewhat consistent while stepping up to a full-size handgun like the Sig Sauer P320. For this type of holster, we're big fans of the Comp-Tac Infidel Max, which is built for larger frame pistols and has adjustable cant to suit your personal preference.
