Brutus' Description

This is a really nice lot of the highly desirable Bulgarian Makarov Military pistols made by Arsenal. 9x18 Caliber, Semi-Auto 8 Round capacity.  Due to import restrictions each of these pistols came into the country with a non descript target grip installed, however, the original checkered red bakelite grips with the Communist Star were included and each pistol will ship with both grips.

Expect some holster wear on the sharp edges but overall these pistols are in surplus very good condition with many bordering on excellent.
We offer a hand select option that will get you the best of 10 cosmetically.

Note : A very few of these came with the Black Checkered Military Grip with the Communist Star rather than the red grip. If you prefer the black military grip we can offer them as a custom option while supplies last for an up charge of $20.00.

Excellent Value For The Money
Review by Josh on 8/29/2016

I didn't choose the hand select but I still got an excellent gun. No real wear on the gun except a small little scratch on the finish. Only wear is on the back side of the grip but that isn't even that bad. Overall this is a great value for the money and the 9x18 round is awesome.

Very Happy, the non hand select that was a hand select!
Review by Ryan on 10/23/2015

Picked this beauty up the other day from my rod and gun club and whoa was this thing lathered in cosmoline! I had to let the parts soak in mineral spirits for 2 hours to clean the pistol, afterwards the absolute beauty of the bluing and bake-light grips popped out. I ordered a non hand select just because of most reviews stating there pistols were lathered in cosmo and dropped in a bag. It is my observation and recommendation to save your 20 bucks, I see no way how you can pick a pistol and determine its condition while its covered in grease and in a bag! The only mark I could find is where they stamped the importer on the slide and even that is a small mark. watch the video and make your decision, thanks again classic!

What a good deal, I only wish I would have bought one back in 1998 when I first came across the Makarov pistol. The first pistol was like new in box. The second had a few dings and scratches. Both look like they were only proof fired. Mine didn't come with any log books, however they did come with the holster in Mint condition. I would find a buddy and order two for the better deal. Thanks Classic Firearms!

I got a Baikal made Makarov

I received mine on 2/23/2017. Cleaned it. Checked the inscriptions and stamp markings. I did not get a Circle 10. I got a Circle with a Triangle and Line inside the Triangle.

Went online to check and this is a Russian Makarov.

Get these while they are hot. Unfired and awesome collector's piece.

Just received my purchase of a Bulgarian Makarov standard purchase ( not hand select ) and I have to say this is a sweet little gun. This is my second one I own. I have a Russian made Baikal IJ-70 Makarov I bought almost 15 or 20 years ago, that is still like new. and this new Bulgarian is just as nice if not nicer. Nice blueing, The double action pull on the trigger has some poundage. but the single action is right in the sweet spot, very nice! Drop hammer safety, smooth slides, nice Friggin little gun .... If I could I would buy 2. Heck I just mightI.....Ha Ha....highly recommend this purchase if you are looking for one.
The best value of 2016

When I received my Bulgarian Makarov, it was covered in cosmoline. So the very first thing I did after was go to the local store, and pick up paint thinner. I disassembled the pistol, and laid everything in a steel bucket. I then poured the paint thinner in, and let it sit for about 15 minutes. After that I took a new toothbrush, and went to work cleaning the whole pistol. After about 10 minutes of cleaning I dried everything off. I proceeded to oil the gun, and reassembled it.

At the range, it shot very strait. The gun for me does shoot higher, than my other pistols. So I just need to compensate for that point-of-aim. Overall I am very pleased with the pistol, and how fast Classic Firearms was able to ship it out too me the very next day. I look forward to my next purchase with them.

I picked the Makarov up from the FFL over lunch, after dinner when I had clean off the storage grease it basically looked like a brand new pistol. My hope is these are still available once I rebuild my slush fund.

Thanks Classic.

Pistol was in very good condition even though it was not a hand select. No Holster, cleaning rod or log book come with this batch. Still a great gun though. Very little cosmo on gun and it cleaned up very well.

Customer service was amazing. Had call in to inquire about my gun shop of choice submitting their FFL license with Classic. Issue was resolved very fast.
great product for price

I've looked around for a few months now for a Makarov and price follows quality. I found it here on Classic Firearms and my first buy. Ordered on line and waited 2 days for a ship confirmation that didn't arrive but a very nice fellow quickly checked and assigned a new shipping number so I could track my order. It arrived in 3 days.
Yahoo!. Upon opening the product box I noticed the red-ish grip missing as I ordered an up charge black grip so I called and they said they'd ship it as it must have been missed by a newer packing person. They shipped it priority and I got that in a day and a half. Things happen! It is how these things are dealt with and CLassic jumped right on it. With gun cleaned of cosmoline via an ultra sonic cleaner picked up at Harbor Frgt it was squeaky clean in 10 minutes and ready for oil , assembly and inspection. My unit seems it was test fired at the factory only as there was no internal wear. On the outside bluing a minor nick that had to be looked for and it seems by serial number it is 35 years old. I am more than pleased with value + product. Took it to the range the following day and I am hyped. It shoots as good as an H&K P30sk albeit the trigger is a bit heavy but there is instructions at Makarov.com in how to lower the weight of pull for the DA. All in all I am pleased an may buy another. I am happy I found this quality company to deal with and will purchase more as I am now hooked on weapons that are different from the major brands we all know. Maybe an older CZ next or a Tokarov.

There is no holster or cleaning rod or maint log with this batch. I don't know why but don't expect it. Nevertheless, the pistol is more that I could ever expect. I really don't think it was ever used because I'm going to be breaking it in! It's a 1985 serial number and after a thorough cleaning, I just can't express how satisfied I am with this gun. I bought it mid Jan 2017.
Make sure you clean the firing pin area. Can't wait to shoot it. Enjoy
Watch the plumb finish!
Review by Steven on 1/21/2017

The subject line isn't about what I bought, it's about what happened when I cleaned it. I just picked one of these up and was surprised to find how little cosmo was on/in it. But it needed cleaning and I wanted to try something different than soaking in spirits. So I tried hot water and Simple Green. The water was hot but not what I'd call scalding and was for not boiling. After a 15 min soak I used a old toothbrush and scrubbed the parts. Then rinsed in another tub of hot, clean water. Then while drying the parts I noticed that the safety, the hammer and the extractor - the cool plumb red parts that match the grip that makes this a nice looking gun - the color was gone! I assumed that color was the result of heat treating but how could hot water change that? The parts are still blued but I'm at a loss about the color change. I have a hard time believing those parts were colored w/ some cold process like tinting but what else explained what happened?
Anyway, other than my discovery, the pistol is in great condition.

This was my first purchase from Classic. I liked the price point, the Eastern Block history, and the reviews from other customers; being new to the sport of shooting, all these added up for me to make the purchase. I have not been disappointed. I have taken it out to the shooting range several times, and I have had a great time showing it off to others so they can enjoy the shooting experience also. If considering this pistol at all, you can't go wrong.

Great Makarov appears unissued.

I purchased one of these based on Ben's video. The description was Very Good to Excellent and I would describe mine as excellent and unissued. I received this covered in Cosmoline and it took me an hour plus to clean it up. Dismantling it was easy and the hardest part was freeing up the firing pin. Lots of solvent and pushing it back and forth with a pin to free it up. My Pistol unexpectedly came with a holster but it was not in great condition. I already had one so no big deal. I test fired 3 rounds using Wolf ammo and it cycled and functioned perfectly. A great little pistol to add to the collection!
Excellent Pistol
Review by John on 10/6/2016
Quality
The pistol I received was in excellent condition. I could tell it had not been shot very much by the internals (I took the entire pistol apart minus the barrel). I did "hand select" and it seemed to be worth it. The pistol came covered in cosmoline and it took application of a little heat and mineral spirits to remove it. I wouldn't recommend someone who is shy taking apart a pistol (maks are a good place to start as they are pretty simple) to buy one as a full cleaning is necessary to get these pistols in good working order.

One negative was the magazine I received did not work. Only a couple of rounds could be loaded into it and the slide would not strip rounds off when it came forward. Classic firearms made this right by sending me another magazine that functioned flawlessly.

What a business does when something goes wrong shows a lot about the integrity of Classic Firearm's leadership. These pistols and accessories are in used, surplus condition and the fact that i was sent another magazine was appreciated greatly.

I will definitely consider purchasing more products from Classic Firearms! Thanks!

If you are considering one definitely do it! I paid for hand select and it was well worth it. Holster wear is only sign was ever issued to anyone. Full of cosmoline, but thats what keeps it looking so nice after all. Very accurate little gun as well, little snappy with some of the hotter modern loads but still very manageable.

While it wasn't flawless cosmetically, I actually like it when my guns are a little dinged up. I've heard prior to buying it that they had a little kick, however I thought it was a pleasure to shoot and the recoil very minimal, slightly more than a glock 17. It was very accurate as well.
Sweet indeed!!

Select Makarov ordered appears to be unfired judging from all criteria I know of. Requisite pickeling in mineral spirits revealed this gem and I must say it exceeded already high expectations. Provenance markings have it stored in cosmoline last 28 years - my good fortune for the $$!!
Nice Bulgarian Makarov
Review by Kenneth on 8/12/2016
Quality
This is a nice handgun, have yet to take it shooting but the overall quality of the gun is excellent. I give this Mak a 5 star rating because there is no damage on the gun that would make this gun a paperweight, from shipping to the FFL. As far as classic goes, great shipping, service, and selection. Second firearm purchase from here and will continue to buy from them. Hopefully we will see more surplus (rare and common) in the future. But once I cleaned the Mak and tested the slide release I did notice the mag comes out when i use the slide release. I think the mag either needs trimmed or something might have came loose. but I do know classic is not responsible.

I opted for the hand select option and wasn't disappointed. I received what appeared to be an almost brand new pistol. After cleaning up the cosmoline, I could only find the slighted scratch on the slide. In terms of functionality, it has operated like a gem. I am a very satisfied customer.

I've been wanting one of these little handguns for quite some time and decided to finally pull the trigger on picking one up. I opted out of the hand select option due to the overall condition of the lot as a whole and I received a Makarov in beautiful shape. I would rate the bluing at a solid 95%; it really is a fantastic example! As noted in previous reviews, expect the firearm to come caked head to toe in cosmoline. This didn't bother me though, because the pistol was free from any rust or pitting, and in all honesty, half the fun comes from cleaning everything up and getting familiar with the inner workings. If you're on the fence, I would strongly recommend picking one up. You really can't go wrong!
Better than Expected
Review by Orang Besar on 8/5/2016
Quality
This is only my second handgun purchase. I ordered the Makarov about a week after I ordered a p64 (which I have also reviewed). So my comments are from a novice, albeit one who is mechanically inclined.

My Makarov arrived last week and when I picked it up from the FFL, I noticed something unexpected. The other reviews prepared me to receive a pistol smothered in cosmoline, but not so. There was very little cosmoline on it. Looked like it had been wiped down. So maybe that was part of the hand selection process. Anyway, when I got home, I cleaned it off some more with some degreasing spray and I am happy to say it looks great - like new. There is perhaps a tiny bit of holster wear near the muzzle, but it's barely noticeably.

Loading the magazine is easier than my p64 due to the provision of a catch on the follower that you can hook your fingernail onto to retract the spring for loading. I am a bit sad it only came with one magazine, but I knew that when I ordered it. The holster also looks new, nice supple black leather, although it reeks of cosmoline. The trigger effort in double action is also much better than my p64.

I haven't had the chance to fire it yet; I need to clean the cosmoline out of the innards first - it's soaking in mineral spirits right now. Since I'm new to handgun ownership, I plan to sign up for some training and get my carry permit before I do a lot of shooting. I'll try to update my impressions after I shoot off some rounds.

Classic Firearms gets an A+ on this one.
Greasy gun that cleaned up beautifully!

The gun came caked in cosmoline on the outside, I cleaned it up with brake parts cleaner and elbow grease and took it apart...Removed grips and cleaned. ...again cosmoline caked on the inside and the action. Solution brake parts cleaner, I could have also soaked it in diesel fuel. Rinsed with Hoppes quick cleaner and lube them Remoil to the action. Cleaned barrel and reassembled. After about an hour of work, the ugly duckling is a beautiful swan. The condition is close to 100% and I question if this one was ever issued. About as close as one can get to new!

I purchased the standard grade and was very impressed when I received it. Bluing is perfect. The accessories were perfect and included lanyard, holster, and cleaning rod. I also ordered an extra magazine. All came packed in heavy cosmoline, which I cleaned off with mineral spirits (works great for this). I was somewhat concerned about the rifling however, which does not look strong to me, but this may be typical of the model, so some one with more expertise can answer this. I took it out to the range, and at 10 yds. it fired about a 5" group, which is about all I expected I would be able to do with this type of gun, so if you are looking for something more accurate at long range, I would shell out the big bucks and buy something else with a longer barrel (you pros out there can probably do better). Sights were off, and I needed to self adjust as it shot high and to the left. For a C & C gun, this fits my needs, as it is small, fits great in my large hands, and is accurate enough at the needed ranges you can expect to encounter. Mechanically it worked flawlessly, the design is awesome, and easy to clean, and allows easy removal of the firing pin (you tube it). Tried some rapid fire with no jams. Very good purchase.
First purchase from Classic but certainly not my last!

I had always been eyeing the Makarovs here on the site and finally decided to pull the trigger and order one, and I have to say I'm absolutely thrilled I did. I rolled the dice and decided to opt out of the hand select option and see what came in. It arrived at my local FFL dealer in a small box, bagged up in a plastic bag and absolutely coated with grease, but if it means keeping it in immaculate condition while it was in storage it's a small price to pay. It also came with a nice looking black leather holster and cleaning rod. Got it cleaned up and broke it down to get a better look at all the inner workings and was thrilled to see the barrel was absolutely immaculate. The exterior was also gorgeous, with very little noticeable wear on the frame except for some minor holster wear near the barrel, but that was to be expected.
Eventually got around to buying some ammunition for it and decided to try it out. This is where I had my only hiccup. I loaded a few rounds into the magazine and pulled the trigger only to get a click of the hammer falling and the weapon not firing. After a few more pulls of the trigger I got it to fire which it did flawlessly. Decided to try again and had it misfire a few more times which got me a little dejected. I thought I had meticulously cleaned everything and thought perhaps something mechanically wrong had occurred. Finally thoughI gave it one last chance and it fired on the first pull of the trigger without a hitch. 50 rounds later the Makarov would shoot crisply without any issues and was an absolute blast. After shooting I broke it down and cleaned it again, and figured perhaps the cause of my misfires lay in fact it hadn't been fired in close to 30 years and just needed to be "warmed" up again. Since then I've had absolutely zero issues with this little beauty, and I can't begin to thank Classic enough for sending me such a nice gem. If you are on the fence about grabbing one of these, don't hesitate! You won't be disappointed!

Best value on gun market today
Review by Scott on 7/1/2016

Got my Makarov pistol and was very impressed by the appearance. It looked flawless (I did not use the handpick option). After stripping off the cosmoline, and disassembling the entire weapon, it was indeed flawless, there wasn't even a scratch or wear mark on any of the internals. This was as new as a surplus weapon could get. A very simple gun to quickly disassemble and reassemble. Far less finicky than its smaller P-64 cousin (also a Classic purchase). At the range, this thing was dialed in before the first mag was empty, 3" groupings at 10 yards for someone who goes shooting 3-4x a year. That says a lot. The DA trigger pull was a little weighty but not the nightmare of the p-64 DA. Think of it as another safety feature. Best SA trigger pull I've ever experienced and I think it will get better as the weapon breaks in. DA will probably smooth out as well. Getting ready to stock the cabinet with a couple more of these beautys before the market runs dry. Great job Classic, preserving history and liberty with these fine surplus offerings.

Took longer to ship than I would've liked but considering the craze that was going on its fine because once it shipped I had it in 2 days. Always a pleasure doing business with Classic.
Outstanding Condition, Nice extras, one disappointment
Review by Brad on 6/28/2016
Quality
I purchased one of the new lot of Bulgarian Makarovs in June 2016. It's my first Makarov, and I chose the hand select option. The pistol arrived with a leather flap holster in very good condition, complete with a lanyard. The leather in the holster appears hydrated, with no cracks or abrasions. The pistol itself has a generous coating of cosmoline (I view that as a good thing), and the finish and wear on the hammer, barrel, and sear is very near 100%. The gun looks basically unfired, though I can't tell for sure with the cosmoline.

Unfortunately, that cosmoline is the only thing holding the grip on! The pistol is missing a grip screw. I'm not sure whether or not the hand-select option looks for this or not, but it is disappointing.

Overall, fair price for an old pistol in outstanding condition. The original serial numbers match, and the added importer engravings are about as unobtrusive as possible.

opted for hand select, figured you can never go wrong with hand select on surplus. Defiantly worth the 20$. My mak came in amazing shape. Not a single blemish or wear mark. Actually mint. I just received one of these Makarov pistols from Classic, and it is by far one of these nicest "used" surplus weapons I have purchased to date. Ben there at Classic wasn't joking about the description and appearance, as the one I got appears to be unissued. The bluing is very nice! I am so glad that I was able to get in on this deal!

Also, this pistol appears to be oiled very heavily, not packed in Cosmoline grease as other firearms I have gotten have been. So the difficulty getting this stuff out of every nook and cranny with mineral spirits is a whole lot easier.

Just picked up my new Bulgarian Mak from local ffl shop. Gun was in a ziploc bag and drowned in cosmiline. This is my first Mak. Always wanted one was waiting for the right batch. My patience paid off with an absolute beauty! After 2 hr mineral spirit bath this rough diamond came 2 life. I put a few pics up of before and after! It took a bit longer to arrive becouse of the tragic events in Orlando. But the wonderful people at Classic Firearms made my first purchase a breeze!
Id like to thank everyone at Classic Firearms for the amazing customer service! This pistol is almost brand new. The bore looks perfect . The only blemish I found is around the muzzle. Mist likely holster wear. Otherwise its a jam! EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH THIS COLD WAR CLASSIC.

Better than expected
Review by James on 6/20/2016

Have been wanting one of these cool Cold War pistols for a while, saw it go on sale and placed my order. It came in a ziplock bag with quite a bit of cosmoline, buy some rubber gloves ahead of time! Anyway, took it apart and after 4 soakings in very hot water, it was ready for a good cleaning. Took it to the range for Fathers Day and it shoots solid, a bit high, but after a few minutes, I was on center. If you like collecting older military-type weapons, pick one up, just be prepared for some heavy cleaning. I think mine was made in 1989 according to the markings.
Luck of the draw
Review by Al on 6/17/2016

I ordered a non-hand select based on the reviews and the listing description of excellent to like new. Mine arrived with surface and edge bluing wear in several locations on the slide and on metal on the front of the hand grip consistent with moderated usage and holster wear. And it has a few scratches in the bluing on the slide consistent with handling. There is also evidence of moderate use based on surface finish removal and burnishing on the barrel, rails, action parts, and face of the hammer. I would rank mine as VG, not excellent and certainly not like new. It seems to be in functional order after cleaning off a lot of cosmoline. I am not overly disappointed - luck of the draw I guess - but be aware there is apparently a range of conditions with these pistols.

This wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I REALLY wanted to leave a perfect review, but I'd be lying. This was my third order from Classic, and unfortunately, wasn't the best experience. Customer service has always been great (and continues to be), as have the guns themselves, until now. Previously, I had purchased one of the Yugo SKS's, which was in great shape (rated vg-ex in description on the site), along with some Yugo surplus ammo, and have also bought one of the Romanian TTC's, which was also flawless (though I was keeping my fingers crossed for one with star grips lol). The reason I mention those, is to say that I have typically had very good experiences with Classic. This was not necessarily one of them though. The Makarov that I received, which was described as being excellent-like new, has a medium/large sized spot on the slide with pitting. This normally wouldn't be a huge deal to me, since I would expect a little pitting/wear on an older surplus gun. What bothers me, is that this Makarov is the highest rated, yet worst actual condition of any of my Classic purchases. I had been looking at/wanting a Mak for a long while now and was excited to finally purchase one that I was expecting to be in amazing shape, given the condition of my other purchases from Classic, which were rated at lower grades on the site. Needless to say, I'm pretty disappointed this time. Maybe I'm just the unfortunate one, and the rest of them are perfect, but if you are looking at one of these, just be aware that it may not quite live up to the excellent/like new rating listed. Still a fan of Classic as a whole, and will likely order from them again, but still, I wish I had a do-over on this one...
Very satisfied overall

The gun itself was in unissued condition with perect bluing - no scratches or holster wear. However the grip had a a gouged edge and a few scrapes around the scre area.I am still happy because a grip is much easier and cheaper to replace than damaged or worn bluing.

The magazine that came with the gun was also in unissued condition but I ordered an extra magazine that was very used. It had some corrosion and a twisted deformed spring. I hope it will function properly.

I've had this Makarov for a month now and have put 100 rounds though it, however I feel I can give it a fair review. This is a very fun and pretty pistol! The Bakelite grip is really something to appreciate; they clean up great and have a really nice reddish hue to them. As for clean up it's as easy as walking! Pull down the trigger guard, set it to the right or left ,pull the slide all the way back lifting up slightly, and voila! Ready to be pampered. The holster the pistol comes with is all in really nice condition, I was honestly surprised I thought it would be nicked and marked up; it also has a space for a second magazine. The 8 round magazine is stiff but with time gives in a bit. I would recommend getting a second magazine now that classic has them in stock again. Overall very happy with my purchase especially it being my first from Classic Firearms. Will continue to shop and let others know about the website.

I am very happy with my purchase from classic. The Bulgarian Makarov is beautiful with no signs of wear. Expect to spend a lot of time cleaning cosmoline. I did not opt for the hand select and received what looks to be an unissued pistol.

I just received the Bulgarian Makarov I ordered several days ago at the local FFL shop. I was pleasantly surprised by its like new condition. It is being soaked in mineral spirits to remove a little cosmoline preservative, and I hope to be able to shoot it within the next few days. It's going to be fun ! Many thanks to Classic Firearms and the local FFL shop at the Bullseye Range.

My all steel constructed beauty came buried within a bag of cosmoline. After taking it home and soaking it in a bath of mineral spirits I was pleased with the finish of the slide as well as visual inspection if the quality of the gun's parts and it's epic trigger pull! Be sure to disassemble your mag while it soaks in the mineral spirits; it is full of cosmoline! Just shot it today and it took 100 rounds of 55 grain winchester loads like a champ and shot with precission. This firearm is a winner and I will most likely be purchasing another one.
It's a fine pistol!

Well I have to say somebody at classic knows how to pick them. The pistol took 1 week to arrive so not bad at all. The FFL dealer didn't want to let it go. Even in the cosmoline it looked pretty good. It took me about an hour and half to get the cosmoline off. The blueing is nice, but it's the trigger that takes the cake. I've read plenty reviews about the infamous heavy trigger pull. I have experienced way worse on smith and wesson revolvers. This thing isn't what I would call "heavy". Maybe I just got lucky. It's smooth though. Single action is amazing. Can't say more than it exceeded my expectations.

Great condition, great looking pistol. There are a few slight imperfections in the finish, and a few very small dings in the grips, but there isn't a speck of rust anywhere on the gun. Barrel looks unfired. These guns (At least the one I got) and the cleaning rod are absolutely coated in storage grease, so it'll need a thorough cleaning before it can be fired.
Nice pistols, but don't bother with hand select

I've been looking for a Makarov pistol for years. All of the local gun stores never carried them, so I decided to buy one from Classic. I opted to pay the extra $20 to hand select "for Cosmetic Condition.

First off, the hand select is a waste of money. If the general condition of these pistols is excellent to like new, I'd expect there to be a bit of holster wear, with hand select being those that have the least holster wear. My pistol had very noticeable holster wear along the entire length of the slide on both sides, and the front of the grip had zero bluing left. If I didn't pay for hand select I'd be fine with that, but paying $20 more for supposedly better cosmetic condition should yield a pistol with far less wear to the bluing. There's the obvious excuse that this is surplus but c'mon, this isn't unissued or like new at all. If you are thinking about hand select, just save your $20 for an extra magazine instead.

With that said, the pistol is functionally perfect. It fired flawlessly and is very fun and engaging to shoot. The trigger is just fine for a surplus pistol, and the craftsmanship is superb. The simplicity of the gun is remarkable, and it was very easy to detail strip to clean out the cosmoline. My pistol was manufactured in 1989 based on the date code, and the barrel looks like it hasn't had many rounds through it at all (carried a lot, but not fired much). I also like how it came with a holster, lanyard, and cleaning rod, but wish it came with more than one magazine. I ended up purchasing two extras for $30/each.

It is a decently accurate, historical, good-looking, relatively inexpensive, and fun to shoot pistol that I would recommend to anyone. Classic shipped quickly, I just wish that hand select yielded something that was actually worth spending extra for. Buy these while you can, because they'll be gone soon enough I'm sure, just save your extra $20.

About as good as a handgun can get in my book. So It doesn't have the fit and finish and show of a custom 1911, but this pistol will go bang everytime. The design is brilliantly simple, reliable, and accurate. At least for me, this pistol is very ergonomic, and recoil is absent. Highly recommended!!!

After having excavated a solid object from a pit of cosmoline I discovered that it contained an absolutely beautiful Bulgarian Makarov. The pistol was flawless (not a hand select) with perfect bluing and red star grips. Took it to the range and ran 150 rounds of through it without a hitch and with superb accuracy. Good work Classic! You never cease to amaze me with your fine product line and customer support.

I finally got around to shooting my Mak and it is a fine shooter. Recoil is not bad although the angle of the grip and all steel frame is a bit stout, similar to a PPK if you have ever had the chance to run a few mags through one of those. All in all a great pistol, like new condition and something I would trust as my carry gun. Best is the pistol loosened up nicely after a couple boxes of 9x18's. I would highly recommend one of these for any collector and lover of shooting sports.

Couldn't be more pleased. Didn't bother hand selecting. Spent an evening removing the very generous coating of Cosmoline (removed grips and soaked with the Hoppes #9) to reveal this gem. Zero wear and appears as is it was never issued. Love how easy it is to field strip this gun for cleaning. Ran 50 rounds through with no problems. Good shooting little pistol.

As advertised, the handgun I got was in like new condition. I can't find a single flaw in it. I decided not to go for the hand select option. My luck paid off, because the handgun I received is incredible. After an hour of cleaning the cosmoline off with mineral spirits, it looks like it just rolled off the assembly line. It also came with a second magazine and a service manual, which was an added bonus. Well worth the price, considering more heavily used Makarovs go for equal or great value.

My Bulgarian Makarov was retrieved from the local FFL shop today, and looks great (apart from the ample cosmoline dressing). There are no scratches, dings, or signs of wear at all. It came with a Republic of Slovenia log, spare magazine, holster, cleaning rod, and lanyard, all in fine shape. I don't read Slovene, but am guessing from the minimal entries in the log that this pistol was test-fired, entered into inventory, then out-processed without seeing active service. The clerk at the gun shop looked over, then said, "Nice piece--congratulations." Highly satisfactory purchase, including fast service from the Classic folks.

I received my Bulgarian Makarov last week and it is a very nice, well made, durable pistol. I bought it to replace the Russian Mak that I bought for $130.00 and foolishly sold back in the early 90's. Then, I came across these Bulgarians from Classic Firearms and finally decided to get another one--paying the additional twenty bucks for the extra inspection of the gun by (what I believed to be) a competent inspector. Anyway, upon receipt, I observed there to be a rather substantial rust "pit" on the slide, near the muzzle. Now, I'm not terribly worried about this cosmetic blemish--that will not affect the performance--but I should have received a cosmetically perfect firearm since I actually paid extra for that service. And--as the gun otherwise appears to be unissued--this should have been observed rather easily. From this incident, as well as what others have written about their doubts as to whether it is even possible to properly inspect these fine pistols due to the cosmoline involved, Classic Firearms should either stop making the "inspection" an option and ripping people off of an additional twenty dollars (which quickly adds up when you have as many customers as CF must have) or actually "inspect" the guns and only ship cosmetically "perfect" (or as close to perfect as possible) to those who pay for this service. This is the first firearm that I've bought from Classic Firearms and this incident has kind of soured my belief in their integrity. If I ever buy another gun from them, I'll report back with my observations (bad or good)--hopefully it'll be a slightly better experience than this has been.

First of all I did not choose hand select. Now I am no expert gunsmith but I am willing to bet this pistol has never been fired or carried. There is not a mark on it and the feed ramp is pristine. It is just what I wanted, a smaller gun but built like a tractor. Do not buy this for a small lady-friend, you gotta have some hand strength to rack it. Field stripping could not be simpler, but again, you gotta have a good grip - the spring is BIG. Cleaned the cosmo with kerosene, no problem. One last thing guys, sometimes I see people suggesting using gasoline to clean cosmo. Never NEVER use gasoline for anything other than your car and lawnmower. It is way too volatile and easily ignited. You are setting yourself up for a horrific accident.

Well the Makarov I just bought looks as good as new. I had to buy one because a friend of mine bought one here in October, and its a real shooter. I love CZ pistols, and shoot them very well. This Makarov will keep up with and even out shoot my CZ83. I cant explain it. I can hit anything I want. It may not out shoot my CZ SP-01, but nothing can under $2,000.00
It is a heavy little pistol in a good way. I dont care for plastic guns, and this is no plastic gun. The bakelite grip is robust not wimpy. Folks, buy one while you can, and order a few extra mags. You wont regret this gem.

Well, what can I say that hasn't been said about this great firearm? I was expecting the worse with the cosmo coating, but when I opened the box, it was in what appeared to be a sandwich baggie, but as I removed it to my surprise, it was only lightly coated, but I could already tell it was a keeper, as the finish was as smooth as a babies bottom, and the holster was not even lightly used, but it did come with a log book, and after about an hour of clean up, field stripped in a pan of mineral spirits, I knew I had a diamond in the rough. to my surprise all the internals were in great shape, including the fireing pin, and the only wear I could find was a little right above the bullet feed, going into the chamber, but after a great rinse of the parts in soapy water, and blow dried, I cleaned everthing in hoppy number nine solvent, and when I ran a mop down the barrel, let it soak for about ten minutes, I ran a brush with a patch on it, and to my surprise, it came out clean. according to my numbers, these are military issue, and I will say whoever had this pistol treated it like his own, as there are no scratches, no issue with anything, and the barrel don't even have holster wear. according to my numbers on Makarov's website, it was definetly made in Bulgaria, arsenal, and it was made in 1988, and my production number was one thousand, eight
hundred and twelve, so that must have been one of the better runs. Also, the log book did have a date of 2004, that leads me to believe it was in service for 16 years, and possibly crated from 2004 until present. I found this classic website purely by accident, but if anyone reads this post that is looking for a Makarov, this is most definetly the batch to buy from. I have seen maks on other sites, for less money, but no comparison what so ever. I clean it twice on the Saturday I got it, and went to the range sunday, and ran 100 rounds thru it, single action, double action, quick shooting emptying the mags, no problems what so ever. I ordered 3 more mags for it today, and now have a total of five, and, yes I'm going to carry it full time, now that I know its safe, and reliable. I might buy another, but they have some excellent to new sks long guns fresh out of the crates also I might buy.
All around amazing pistol for an even better price!

I'll keep this short but would just like to say that I received my Makarov within a week of ordering, and it is just as beautiful as I pictured it would be. The only wear on the pistol (literally) was just some very slight holster wear on two spots where the gun would rub against the holster. The spots are literally less than a millimeter big. The bluing is perfect. It's as if the weapon was never fired.

Cosmoline came off easily with some goo-gone, hot water, and a cheap medium bristle toothbrush to reveal a real beauty. Have not gone to fire it yet but I have the utmost confidence that it will fire like a dream. It's also nice that the pistol came with all the paperwork and history. Very, very cool. Total win for Classic Firearms and anyone who purchases this. Get them while you can. I am most likely going to buy another or a p64 very soon.

I love this new pistol. I already had a 10rd mak that was well used, so I wanted one in better condition. I received a pistol that has been barely shot. It had lots of cosmoline and took about 2 hours to clean with mineral spirits and a toothbrush. When I got it clean, it shined like a new one. Blueing was 98%. It had one tiny scratch 1/8 long. Feed ramp looks like it is new. I Shot 50 rounds of the cheapest Russian ammo through it I could find, and it cycled every round perfectly. The holster and cleaning rod were nice too. No log book, would be nice to have, but I don't need that.
I've been looking at these since classic received them and finally just decided to get one after reading reviews stating their good condition. I am glad I did! The pistol arrived 8 days after I ordered and it was right after Christmas, so I know they were busy. When I emailed classic about my ffl's registration they emailed me right back and reassured me every thing went through. Great customer service. Gun was packaged securely as well.

Conclusion: If you have the money, and want a nice specimen of one of the finest and longest used military pistols In the world; BUY ONE!

Several years ago we bought a Bulgarian Makarov at a gun show, for my Wife and she loved it.
After shooting it, since then I realized there was more to this pistol than meets the eye.
At some point in time I decided that the only mistake I made was not buying a second, but by this point, the supply had dried up and I kicked myself on a regular basis
Recently, someone came across a nearly new batch and here we are.

I spent some fun time cleaning the cosmo off, but it revealed exactly what I had hoped for, a near factory finish and I can't wait to shoot it.

Purchased two of these pistols during the Black Friday sale. I did not hand select these pistols because this batch is considered excellent to new condition. I opened up the first pistol and it was coated in cosmoline and I would say is unissued, which the log book that accompanied it attested. 5 star pistol. The second pistol had very little cosmoline almost like it had been wiped clean externally. It did not come with a log book, and is well used. The blueing on the front of the frame and below the hammer is completely gone, and the safety switch has very little brown finish left. Plus about a 2 inch scratch along the top of the grip. I'm guessing this is a left over pistol from the last batch. I would consider this a good to very good pistol, so 3 stars. Which averages 4 stars overall. both pistols shoot flawlessly. The accessories were in great shape and for sure a bonus. I am tempted to buy another to attempt to get another mint pistol.

The good news is that mine came with all the accessories: logbook, lanyard, cleaning rod, and a very nice black holster that looks unused.

But the gun itself also came with very obvious worn-off bluing on both sides of the slide by the front edges, despite my having paid extra for "hand select for cosmetic condition". So either Classic is reaching the bottom of the barrel on this batch, or the person doing the hand-selecting didn't really want to spend much time handling a bunch of cosmoline-soaked guns to compare them. If the latter, I wouldn't either -- but then again one does pay more for this service, and thus I would have expected a gun that was closer to "like new" condition than the one I got.

I have acquired several other Makarovs from both this current PW Arms batch and the previous CAI batch, and this one is the least nice cosmetically, despite having been hand selected.

Just received mine from the black Friday sale. Shipped much faster than I thought (I thought holiday traffic would've held it up for sure). Of course it came coated in a luscious layer of cosmoline, enough that it looked like a commie candy apple. So, I just threw it in the oven with the gingerbread cookies and it all oozed out. After a refreshing mineral spirit bath and a quick lubing, she looks....well, new. I cannot find any wear marks, the chrome barrel lining is bright and unmarred and there is only a tiny bit of wear on the bakelite grip (which might not be wear actually, just character flaws from being released from its mold). Thank you Classic Firearms for giving me such a deal and a great customer experience. Don't hesitate, order this gun!

I didn't opt for the hand pick and the pistol is still in great condition. The only signs of wear are on the lanyard loop on the grip but that's not a big deal. These things are packed with cosmoline though but it's not too hard to get off. That being said pay close attention to the hammer release mechanism when cleaning it because I didn't get all the cosmoline off and it didn't fire two rounds out of the first clip, but it was quick to tear apart and wipe down and then it performed flawlessly. Beautiful gun and classic is awesome, I will be doing business with them again in the future
Very happy with the purchase!

Wow! Paid for the hand pick option. Not counting a tiny scratch on the slide, the gun looks brand new. It came with a brand new black holster and a cleaning rod. The year code is 28, which means 1988. The numbers match, except for the mag. Ordered extra mags from Classic. Just a suggestion - having number-matched mags would be a cherry on top of the cake. Thanks, Classic! 5 stars!

This Makarov is in perfect condition, not a blemish to be found! I have never gotten a surplus gun in better shape. I would be amazed if this were ever actually issued. Also comes with enough cosmoline to store three of your other guns! (But well worth the work of removal to uncover this great pistol.)

Received yesterday from FFL. Dropped one in the ultrasonic tank, took it out this morning. Oiled it up, seems to function perfectly. This one is near mint, one little spot on the back of the slide to bare metal, little cold blue on a q-tip you'll never notice.
The other looks as flawless as a commie pistol can look. Keeping that one in the cosmoline. 2 Russians, 2 Czechs, now 2 Bulgarians. A 6 pack of commie goodness, love these little pistols. Think I'll call the Hungarians for a set of zebra wood grips !

This Makarov was in excellent shape when i received it. I don't think this gun was ever fired and came with one mag and a log book from Slovenia. The holster looked new and the finish on this pistol was amazing. I highly recommend buying one if you are looking for a Makarov as most being sold these days for the same price aren't near as nice as these and probably unissued like this one i received.

Not new, excelent, or like new

The pistol I received had fairly significant wear to it. It was obviously handled a lot and shot at least some. It had about 70% original finish, with all the blue wore off the grip, and finish wear on the slide serrations and around the muzzle. There were also normal handling marks.
All that said, it is not a bad pistol. It works well, an probably has the best trigger out of any of my surplus pistols. So my complaint is really not with my gun, but the description. It is a nice "good- v good" gun, but is definatly not an excellent to like new gun.

Other than a small blemish on one side of the grip this thing is in near perfect condition. I would guess 95%. If it was used, it wasn't used too awful much by the former Slovenian soldier it was issued to. Not fluent in any Slavic languages, but judging by the looks of the armorer's manual that came with it, it appears the guy never even bothered to qualify with it. Guess that is what happens when you are a socialist conscript. Perhaps the communist gun grabber Bernie Sanders could elaborate on this phenomenon?

Came pretty caked up in cosmoline, but I submerged it in an ammo can filled with mineral spirits then went to work on it with an old toothbrush. Took about 30 minutes minus the soaking.

Took it to the range two days later and ran a 50 round box of Wolf Polyformance 94 grain through it (also from Classic) and it never had even the slightest issue. Very good shooter. Much enjoyment was had when my friend's Glock .45 that he paid twice as much for jammed on him - twice.

In spite of all the death and human misery these socialists/communists/Bernie Sanders voters have caused over the last century and change, I have to give them much credit on their dependable and robust firearm designs (even though this one seems to be a design stolen from Walther).

Very glad I got one of these excellent pistols. Thanks, Classic!

Arrived 3 days after order. I selected hand pick. The gun is in excellent condition. The bluing looks great, the bore is perfect. There is a tiny rough spot in the back of the slide from the original machining that I have to look closely from a certain angle to see, but it's easy to miss. It's easy to tell this is unissued. The action is smooth and the trigger feels a little heavy in DA but good in SA. The grips are to be expected - basic Soviet polymer.

My wife wants a matching one.

Received my 1991 Makarov today. It was completely covered in cosmoline and underneath was basically a new pistol. Slight handling marks or scratches but in beautiful shape. Came with a holster, lanyard and cleaning rod. It is an excellent buy and I'm not sure if we'll see these in this good of shape again. I've also purchased the Polish P64 and the FEG AP-MBP from Classic and they all have been in great shape and arrived very quickly. Thanks

I did not buy a makarov pistol years ago when they were dirt cheap, so when I saw these, I decided I needed one. The one I received was definitely not "excellent to like new". It has probably 70% finish, with all of the bluing missing on the front and rear of the grip and cocking serrations, and wear around the muzzle, safety, slide release, along with a bit of light use marks. That said, it is a nice gun, bore is perfect to my eye, and it is just in general pretty good shape for a USED surplus pistol. It also has probably the best trigger out of my around a dozen surplus pistols. Im not really unhappy that i bought it, it just is not as nice as I would have expected from the description of "excellent to like new".

Pistol was indeed in unused condition. There were some scratches from handling/storage, but nothing that would have been obvious under the cosmoline coating. The deep almost lustrous bluing more than compensated for these marks. Although I had a handpick, the mag was a mismatch too.

However as a whole, it's easily the prettiest Makarov that I have, and at least as nice, if not better, than the representative picture on their webpage. My order came with the log book in addition to the other items promised in the ad (holster, lanyard, cleaning rod, and mag).

I purchased this pistol expecting casual wear from a police force that never really used their pistols. Turns out the pistol looks like it was used by a police force that doesn't exist. It was unused. No holster wear, no indication of EVER being shot, no scratches, nothing other than a pistol that looks new. But obviously isn't because it was made in 1969, supposedly. The price for this pistol made me want to by 2, or maybe all of them. Definitely not the last time I shop here and if you are reading this then I highly encourage you to buy this Makarov. There is no reason to be disappointed with your purchase. The only downside is the cosmoline. But without it, what would be the fun in mil-surp guns? Let it sit in mineral spirits for an hour or 2.

Once again, I couldn't be happier with my purchase from Classic. Where to start?

First, my pistol shipped very fast. And the extras, oh, the extras. Pistol came with holster, cleaning rod, AND a vintage service log book from Slovenia. So cool.

Pistol was packed in light cosmoline, which is always kind of a fun process to remove. Honestly, I wish more guns were sold in cosmo. Once I got it all off, I found a perfectly blued Bulgarian mak.

Couldn't be happier.

I just picked up my makarov from my local FFL. I am very pleased with the description and condition. It looks like new. It came with a holster and lanyard. All matching numbers and was made in 1989. After purchase I did not realise I could save 9% if I had ordere two at the same time. I called again to order another and a very helpful employee Amber! Provided excellent customer service and said a hand select one would be chosen for Me. I will be doing business with classic firearms again.
Just a few surface scratches
Review by Luke on 10/7/2015

The gun came with 1 magazine, cleaning rod, black leather holster and lanyard, and a maintenance logbook. All the accessories are in excellent condition.

The maintenance logbook does not have a hard cover - it is just a stack of paper stapled together. The stamp on the logbook indicates the pistol was Slovenian military property. The serial number of my gun is written on the logbook - nice match! The dates show that the logbook was created on June 9, 2001, and the weapon was put into storage July 15, 2005.

The gun was caked in thick cosmoline. After a thorough degreasing and re-oiling, the gun looks like it was made yesterday. The barrel seems like it is chrome-lined and looks unfired to me. The bluing is 100%.

I am very happy at the condition of this firearm and that Classic threw in a numbers-matching logbook. I gave it 4 stars because there are a few scratches on the slide and the maintenance logbook I got is kind of cheesy-looking compares to the hardcover logbooks (which I have seen pictures of).

When I first started cleaning this pistol I said wow it looked brand new and I believe it is. The reason I am giving it 3 stars is only because mine came with mismatched slide. The serial numbers don't match. While this may not bother some people it annoys me. I didn't notice this until I had cleaned it. It is nobody's fault ,there is no way to check all those serial numbers before they pack them up. Please don't let this keep you from buying one they are super clean and yours will probably be matching. I would like to buy another to get matching numbers but can't afford it now.

I alway love to get a surplus firearm covered in cosmoline. The more the better. Those that come in like that typically have best bluing, grips, stocks, etc. This
Little pistol is true like new, not a scratch, ding, etc. the barrel looks like it was never fired and the leather holster is also great, like new as well. Cannot wait to shoot and break the pistol in as this like most other Warsaw block weapons cycle a bit rough and just need some rounds down range to take the edge off. Thanks to Classic for another jem, fast shipping and great updates along the way.

I am a sucker for anything in 9x18.

Years ago, I bought both a Bulgarian and Russian commercial Makarov at the same time as a package deal. Unfortunately I had to sell the Bulgarian, and have missed it ever since.

I was happy to see these pop up for sale now that I actually have money, so I grabbed a VG/Exc as soon as I saw the ad.

The pistol came exactly as described, only very minor finish wear and mechanically perfect. I am not too excited about the grips, and will be replacing them with a pair of the brown ones with the star and lanyard loop.

I am guessing those grips were put on before or after importation to replace worn or cracked grips, but I am not sure.

Thanks Classic!

Thanks to the folks from Classic, now I'm the happy caretaker of a fine Bulgarian made Makarov. I opted for the very good to excellent condition with only an extra mag and that is exactly what I've got, no bull here. Very fast shipping and great packaging. It just pleases me when I look at it. I will be replacing the ordinary black grips with the rest thumb with original Bulgarian bakelite made ones with the star on it. Once more, Thanks Classic.
If I could paraphrase the famous Clint Eastwood/Harry Callahan's catchphrase,

Wish them folks from Classic have for sale some of the German or Chinese or even Russian Makarovs. That'd surely make my day and collection complete.

I ordered this pistol as soon as I opened the e-mail. Went with the VG-EX and the hand select. When I got it I was really disappointed. There no way this pistol was the best of ten. There was excessive holster wear, surface pitting on the right rear of the slide, some of the right side of the frame,on the back of the hammer, and at the end of the barrel. It's a suplus firearm and I can take the holster wear. Mine was manufactured in 1979 and was used, but the surface pitting is another story. This pistol does not repersent what was pictured on the website nor the extra money for the hand select. Other than that, the pistol seems sound and should make a decent shooter. I have done a lot of buisness with Classic and this is the first time I have been disappointed with on of there offerings.

  • Brutus' Description

Recieved this along with my Polish P-64 and could not be happier!! I did not give it the 5 starts because of all the cosmoline that was on it. It was packed into the pistol. Aside from that I am very happy with the gun. Great history and a good shooter. This is going to be my primary truck gun. Feels great in my hand and breaks down very easy. Very happy with the purchase.

Paid for the hand select but honestly cannot imagine how Classic rates with so much cosmoline. Holster looks new, cleaning rod and tether. No log book unfortunately but not guaranteed. For the price and quality I'd highly recommend. Shipping on this items was okay, I ordered an extra mag, ammo and nylon case and the order was split up and sent UPS and USPS all to the FFL. Not sure why the non FFL items were not sent to my home address but no matter.

Thanks Classic Arms for once again sending me a great gun!

The firearm was well received. After removing the cosmoline, it does appear to show some wear, mostly at the bottom of the wooden grip rear of the mag release. Blueing was great. I have yet to function test because the ammo I ordered just showed up today (I don't believe this to be Classics fault, most likely the carrier). I did pay for the hand select, but with all the cosmo it was packed in, it would be real hard for anyone to grade the condition until cleaned up. I imagine this batch ClassicFirearms received are just as advertised - excellent to like new condition. Came with one mag, holster, and all the listed accessories from the description.

Barrel is shiny and smooth with no wear marks whatsoever. Mine shipped with the log book and it appears it's only been fired a few times over the years.

One was unfired except by arsenal acceptance, and the 2nd was either fired marginally or hand racked several times. Varsol saved the day as a couple of dunks removed the grease easily and now to lube with oil. Extremely pleased with Classic's selections.

Under all the cosmoline, it was very nice! Solid "Surplus Very Good" condition. The price was very competitive with the current market. Even though I'm late to the Makarov party, I'm happy I was able to snag one in such nice condition. This is my 3rd or 4th Classic Firearms firearm purchase. They've all been fast to ship, packed well, and condition as listed.

If I could paraphrase the famous Clint Eastwood/Harry Callahan's catchphrase,
'Go ahead comrade, Makarov my day.....'

Took a little time to clean the Cosmoline off. Bore is shiny and excellent. A little pitting around the grips. I changed out the original grips for the Pierce Makarov grips. Can't wait to get out and shoot this baby. This is my third gun to buy from Classic and as usual you can't beat the service they provide. Thanks Classic.
