DWM 1904-39 Portuguese Contract 8mm Mauser Bolt Action Rifle, Non-Matching W/Numbers Matching Bayonet to Receiver, Sling & Cleaning Kit - Fair to Good

MPN: 1904/39 Mauser

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

DWM 1904-39 Portuguese Contract 8mm Mauser Bolt Action Rifle with Bayonet, Cleaning Kit and Sling: The rifles under this SKU have all of the primary numbers matching. See more on this below. All come with a bayonet in the sheath, a cleaning kit and a sling. They were graded by the importer and frankly I think they graded them a little too harshly, but we would rather have that than the other way around. To me the ones they call Fair are closer to Good and we in fact would probably call them good as to us they meet that standard.... but we are sticking with their grading. Some will have minor cracked stocks (as indicated in the custom options below) but the key word here is minor with some looking more like scratches than cracks and there are certainly no broken stocks or cracks that would cause safety concerns or inhibit function. The Base Price of the rifle under this SKU refers to the Fair Cracked graded rifles as that is what we have the most of.... with other rifles being higher or lower in price based on their condition or grade. These are very interesting surplus rifles. They are similar to the German K-98 or Yugo M48 but different in some respects from both. They all feature a very distinctive and handsome Portuguese receiver crest, and they will make great collector's pieces as well as wonderful shooters. We also have a great deal on some surplus 8MM ammo available for them Here and Here. -  Important Note - Some of these rifles were packed in heavy cosmoline and while it may not be overly apparent on the outside of the rifles, the barrels and actions may have too much cosmoline in them to allow the rifle to be safely fired without a proper clean up. Please clean the rifle thoroughly and check for obstructions before shooting.  Now - More about these fine rifles - We have found a piece of history and heritage with this shipment of DWM 1904-39 Portuguese Contract 8mm Mauser Bolt Action Rifle – a true relic from the annals of military service. This rifle, known as the Mauser–Vergueiro, boasts a legacy that spans continents and conflicts. Deployed in Portuguese and South African service during the First World War and various colonial campaigns, the Mauser–Vergueiro became a symbol of reliability and resilience on the battlefield. German colonial troops in East Africa even repurposed captured Mauser–Vergueiro rifles, showcasing the rifle's adaptability and durability. While the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps chose British weapons on the Western Front during World War I for logistical reasons, the Mauser–Vergueiro found itself in the hands of Portuguese forces again in 1942. During the brief conflict against the Japanese occupation of Portuguese Timor, the Kropatschek rifles took the spotlight, emphasizing the rifle's diverse historical applications. In 1939, as the Portuguese Army embraced the 7.92×57mm Mauser 98k as the m/937, the Mauser–Vergueiro underwent a transformation. Modified to chamber the new standard 8mm Mauser cartridge, these rifles became the Espingarda 8 mm m/1904-39. While markings remained largely unchanged, some rifles had the caliber designation "6,5" stamped over with two "X" marks – a testament to individual Portuguese armorers adapting the rifle to modern standards. Visually distinguishable from its 6.5mm predecessor, the 8mm variant featured 1939 modifications, including a shorter barrel, a distinctive front sight protector, and a ground-down rear sight base. Despite the technological advancements of the time, the Mauser–Vergueiro maintained its relevance. Continuing in limited use until the mid-1960s, mainly in Overseas units, this rifle stands as a living chronicle of military evolution. Own a piece of history with the DWM 1904-39 Portuguese Contract 8mm Mauser Bolt Action Rifle – where every mark, modification, and battle scar tells a tale of valor and service. These particular rifles do not have matching serial numbers. However, each of these rifle's ship with a bayonet that has a serial # on it that matches the receiver on the rifle, a cleaning kit, and a sling. The condition and even the type/style of slings vary widely and they may not even be original as issued to the rifle but they are as they came to us on the rifles and as such we make no guarantees for the condition or type in regards to the sling. Note About Hand Select - Even though these are pre-graded there are varying degrees of better or worse cosmetic conditions even within the same grade. For those who want us to pick for the best of what is left within the grade selected.... rather than just a random send.... we do offer the hand select option.
