Buying a suppressor is easier than ever in 2025, with convenient e-filing allowing for an average of just 2-5 days for your NFA paperwork to be processed and approved. Classic Firearms makes the process even easier, allowing you to have your suppressor shipped directly to your door!
Suppressors (sometimes colloquially referred to as "silencers") significantly reduce the auditory report of handgun or rifle rounds, particularly when paired with subsonic ammunition. While the resulting sound is quite a bit louder than is typically portrayed in Hollywood movies, a suppressed gunshot is quiet enough to reduce the risk of hearing loss associated with unsuppressed fire.
Despite the obvious benefits, many shooters have put off buying a suppressor because they are classed as an NFA item. This means that in order to lawfully obtain a suppressor, a licensed deal must assist you in filing additional paperwork with the ATF. Only after your paperwork has been approved can the dealer transfer the suppressor, allowing you to take possession.
Waiting periods have typically stretched from three to six months up to an entire year (this is where the "NFA jail" meme comes from). However, with the introduction of the ATF's new electronic filing system, many shooters have been approved for their new suppressor after only a few days.
Yes. Just like purchasing a firearm, it is perfectly legal to purchase a suppressor from a licensed online dealer. The process is quick and easy, here's how it works:
There are dozens of traditional baffled, baffle-less, and flow-through suppressor designs available online. Your selection will depend on your individual goals and the type / caliber of firearm you are planning to suppress. Find the suppressor that works best for you and add to cart.

After you complete your purchase, you will receive an email from Capitol Armory (our Suppressor Fulfillment Partner) with instructions to create your customer profile. This will allow you to complete your ATF NFA paperwork and select your filing type (Individual or Trust).
You will also need an ATF E Forms account for subsequent steps. If you do not already have an account set up, you can create one here.
Once you create an account with Capitol Armory, you will need to submit your fingerprints. You will receive a separate email from Capitol Armory in your inbox with fingerprinting instructions. If you do not have access to an electronic fingerprinting kiosk to submit your fingerprints via EFT file, you can purchase a fingerprint kit here and send in your fingerprints by mail.
Next, you will fill out and sign your Form 4 online using DocuSign. You will then submit your completed Form 4 electronically via the ATF's E Forms filing system.
Average approval times can vary from a couple of days up to several weeks or longer. You can check our Suppressor ATF Wait Times tracker for up-to-date information on suppressor approval times while your paperwork is processing.
Once your Form 4 is approved, you will complete a standard Form 4473 (again using DocuSign). You will identify your Chief Law Enforcement Officer and they will be notified of your purchase. Once your Chief Law Enforcement Officer confirms their receipt of the notice of purchase, you must simply wait 7 days for shipping and you will receive your suppressor at your door!
Shopping online grants access to a wider selection of suppressors and allows for a much shorter waiting period from the time of purchase to the day your suppressor is delivered to your front door.
Moreover, you retain the ability to choose between registering as an individual or using a trust, which allows multiple people to use the suppressor (as long as they are listed on the trust) and simplifies the process of transferring legal possession of the suppressor between those individuals.
Whether you're new to the world of suppressors or simply looking for your next can, shopping online is the fastest way to buy a suppressor in 2025. Need help deciding between a tradition and flow-through suppressor design? Watch our video below for a full comparison.
