Do you need a Class 3 license to purchase a suppressor? Will owning a suppressor get you raided by the ATF? In this blog, we're exploring the legal nuances and dispelling some common myths about suppressor ownership.
A suppressor (also called a silencer) is a muzzle device that provides enhanced hearing protection and recoil control, among other important benefits. Under the National Firearms Act, suppressors are regulated at the federal level and require NFA paperwork as well as a tax stamp to purchase.
The purchaser must be at least 21 years old and must not be a prohibited possessor. Additionally, they must comply with any additional regulations or restrictions in their state of residence.
While most states allow private suppressor ownership for civilians, a few states have enacted bans or introduced additional stipulations for purchasing a suppressor. We recommend contacting your local FFL dealer or state law enforcement agency for the most up-to-date information about the laws in your state prior to purchasing a suppressor.

This was true at one point, but we are happy to report that ATF wait times are down thanks to e-file and other improvements to the approval process. Most customers receive their suppressor within 2-4 weeks.
