Is it a silencer or a suppressor? What's the difference between these terms and can they be actually be used interchangeably? In this blog, we're exploring the history of silencers / suppressors to provide the definitive answer, settling the debate once and for all.
Many shooters use the terms "suppressor" and "silencer" interchangeably, referring to a muzzle device that reduces the overall signature of a gunshot. However, there is extensive debate in the gun community regarding which terminology is technically correct.
The first of these muzzle devices to achieve commercial success was the Maxim Silencer. Consequently, "silencer" was recorded at the patent office and in all of the marketing materials at the time, quickly becoming engrained in popular culture. The term "silencer" was also used in legislation that classified these muzzle devices as NFA items, thereby creating additional requirements for private ownership.
More recently, the firearms industry has adopted "suppressor" as the preferred name for silencers. The argument is that a silencer doesn't completely silence a gunshot, but rather provides sound suppression to reduce the overall noise generated when a gun is discharged. Many consider this to be the more accurate term based on the functionality a suppressor offers.
A silencer can be called a suppressor, and vice versa. Both terms refer to the same device regardless of design, materials, etc. Thus, there is no practical difference between a silencer and a suppressor.
Although the term "suppressor" may more accurately reflect the primary benefit of these muzzle devices, the term "silencer" is still perfectly acceptable. The debate over these terms is largely pedantic, having more to do with word choice and perception of sound reduction than anything else.
There's another word you can use to refer to silencers / suppressors, and that word is awesome.
