Are you ready for a quick English language lesson? Yeah, nope, me either (or is it neither?). We have all had times when we just couldn't find the right word to describe the point that we're trying to get across to someone. Heaven help those of us who talk with our hands too! I struggled with that word for this article. You're all familiar with my mastery of the English language, yep that is a joke, everyone knows that I only speak fluent Southern. Seriously, I need subtitles on some shows and I am always asking my husband "Whud e say?" But for this article, I wanted to get it right. The title of the article is "What is the strongest gun?" I looked at that title at first, and then I said it out loud a couple of times. I contemplated if the word strong was the correct adjective for the point that I was trying to get across. The word "powerful" seems like a more common adjective when describing firearms. Shoot, it even sounds better; would you rather have a strong firearm or a powerful firearm? Yep, me too. But just because, I am a little OCD, I needed to know what the official definition of strong versus powerful was. MERRIAM-WEBSTER:

Definition of strong

(Entry 1 of 2) 1: having or marked by great physical power 2: having moral or intellectual power 3: having great resources (as of wealth or talent) 4: of a specified number (an army ten thousand strong) 5a: striking or superior of its kinda strong resemblance b: effective or efficient especially in a specified direction- strong on watching other people work -- A. Alvarez

Definition of powerful

1: having great power, prestige, or influence and powerful leader 2: leading to many or important deductions and a powerful set of postulates   I read them both carefully, and deducted that I should use the word "strong". The word strong seems all-encompassing to me, and being powerful is a part of that.   What Strong is: robust, tough, steady, substantial, powerful, durable, capable, tenacious, vigorous, stark, rugged, enduring, and unyielding   What Strong is Not: delicate, feeble, fragile, inept, slack, insignificant, ineffective, unable, undependable, untrustworthy, and slack.   Given that, I would have to say that I conclude that:

The Strongest Gun is:

The .50 caliber rifle made by Ronnie Barrett. It is the most powerful firearm that a civilian can buy, able to hit targets up to 2000 yards away and penetrate them with armor-piercing bullets. The Barrett M82 A1, 50BMG, semiautomatic rifle is the first shoulder-fired .50BMG rifle. It has been proven effective in every natural environment known to man. Known for delivering devastation, it still maintains low felt recoil for the shooter, and has a reliable repower with every pull of the trigger. Heck, it's not a rifle, it's America defined! This beautiful, but rather large, masterpiece of firearms ingenuity will set you back between $7,500 to $10,500, without your favorite accessories. For those who own one, across the board, they give their investment a 5-star review.

For those of us who don't have that kind of pocket change, I found some other really great strong firearms!

BARRETT MRAD - So, let's not completely discount the possibility of owning a genuine Barrett Rifle. For about half of the price of the .50BMG, you can get a Barrett MRAD chambered in larger calibers like 338 Lapua Mag, 300 Win Mag, .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, 338 Norma Mag, 300 Norma Mag, and 300 PRC. Let's be reasonable and say that you are likely to be most interested in the .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and keep an eye out for the .338 Lapua. The rise in the popularity of this round continues to trend upward by those who have actually fired it in the field. All of the strength and power that comes with the purchase of the Barrett .50BMG is not lost in the manufacturing of these calibers. Same strength and fortitude as its bigger brother, but with a much more comfortable price point. We are likely sold out of your favorite Barrett rifle for now, so be sure to get on our e-mail list so that you can be among the first that is notified when they do become available. These rifles are not out of reach as far as cost, click on our finance options field and see what we can do for you.

FN SCAR 20 S - While I wouldn't really consider the Barrett a self-defense firearm, there is a large caliber rifle that is for just that. One of the best self-defense rifles on the market today is this FN. This rifle has all kinds of endorsements from Rangers, Marines, and Seals, which should be resounding proof that you can trust it for your self-defense too. Shoots accurately at around 800 yards with the speed of a .308. While it is pretty manageable with its weight, size, and recoil, this rifle will still run you around $4,000.

SAVAGE MSR10 - I know, you are either really a fan of Savage or you are really not. I gave Savage a second look a couple of years ago and all I can say is "sold." These modern sporting rifles are definitely far from the malfunction rumors about Savage that started about 100 years ago. Today Savage manufactures a rifle that well deserves a spot in the top 10 .308's in my opinion. Shooting sports enthusiasts have agreed that Savage has earned its ranking among some of America's finest rifles.

I could continue on with all of the usual favorites, Winchester, Ruger, Mossberg, as they are all respected manufacturers of large caliber rifles. The models are so many that it would be hard to select just one from each manufacturer. I will tell you that when it comes to self-defense and hunting, modular is the latest thing going. I want to tell you about two more .308 rifles that I think are worth taking a look at. These rifles are affordable and desirable. You would be a proud owner of either. Although they are very different, they share a spot on my "strongest gun" run down. Remember I am using the term "strong" as all-encompassing and not necessarily for just "power".

AND Finally...TIKKA. Have you heard of them? More likely than not, has a TIKKA come up in a conversation with your hunting buddies or for self-defense, but it should. TIKKA has been around for a while, the late 1800's to be exact. The brand hails from Finland. For the most part, they made firearm components, and then around 1980, they teamed with SAKO to make a prototype firearm, and they have not looked back since. Still touting tradition, they utilize good old fashioned gunsmithing in combination with advanced technology to bring you a supremely accurate rifle for a very reasonable price.

Just like any firearm, food, shoe, piece of candy, etc...there are definitely naysayers, but I am listening to some folks who have actually shot the TIKKAs and have some credibility. Sniper and Sharpshooter Forums across the web have raving reviews of TIKKA, namely the TIKKA T3X CTR in 6.5 Creedmoor. Go ahead, research them for yourself and then come back to us to get on the availability list for one of these rifles.

THE REAL DEAL Look y'all, the truth is, you may already have the strongest gun in your gun cabinet or night table in a lockbox. The strongest gun to some will not be the strongest to others. But the true strongest gun is the one that makes the shot that counts, whether for self-defense or hunting. Shop All Long Guns
