The AK-47 traces its origins to the Soviet Union in the aftermath of World War II. Designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, the original AK entered Soviet service in 1949 and became one of the most influential military rifle designs of the 20th century. Its successor, the AKM, was introduced in the late 1950s and incorporated manufacturing changes that made the rifle lighter and more economical to produce while retaining the fundamental operating principles of the original design. The 7.62×39mm cartridge became synonymous with both platforms and remains one of the world's best-known intermediate rifle cartridges. The AK-47 is historically recognized for its long-stroke gas piston operating system, robust construction, and reputation for functioning under demanding environmental conditions.
