The Battenfeld 720747R is a perfect example of the capabilities of carbon fiber when applied to cleaning rods. As a material, carbon fiber combines the optimum traits of stainless steel and coated cleaning rods, while introducing further benefits. Where stainless steel rods may potentially scratch or wear barrels if used improperly, carbon fiber rods bring no such risk. Despite their benefits, coated rods can accumulate small abrasive particles, effectively transforming them into a type of fine grit sandpaper for your bore. With carbon fiber rods, there is no such concerns.
One prominent advantage of Carbon fiber rods is that they can hold their form exceptionally. They can bend to an extreme degree and still return to their original straightness. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Tipton was tasked by US military armorers to provide cleaning rods that could handle the rigors of service rifles in demanding conditions. Hence, it was logical to choose carbon fiber, a material perfectly suited for cleaning rods.
These cleaning rods stand out as 'deluxe' models due to their ergonomically designed handle that spins on two sets of ball bearings. This results in a cleaning rod that follows the rifling with smooth, seamless motions, both while pushing and pulling it through the bore, even under intense pressure. Furthermore, the shank-through construction allows users to apply reasonable hammer blows to the cleaning rod's end to thrust a tight patch through a bore.
These cleaning rods are available in four diameters and six lengths, making them compatible with most rifles, pistols, and shotguns. Rifle and handgun rods are threaded for 8-32 accessories, except for the 17 caliber and 20 caliber rods which are threaded 5-40. Shotgun rods, on the other hand, are threaded 5/16-27.
