can the same suppressor be used for different calibers?

Using One Suppressor For Multiple Guns

In general, suppressors are designed to function best with a specific caliber. Different rounds have different ballistic properties and require unique specifications for effective sound suppression. Moreover, certain calibers generate more pressure than others, which factors into how suppressors are constructed as well as the manufacturer's rating for the suppressor.

Most large-bore suppressors can fire multiple calibers, but this is not true across the board. We always recommend confirming that the suppressor you intend to purchase is rated for the caliber you plan to shoot. With those caveats out of the way, many .30 caliber suppressors designed for .308 Winchester / 7.62 NATO can still achieve a substantial auditory reduction when attached to a 5.56 NATO rifle.

The trade-off for convenience is compromise, as shooters should expect a noticeable yet relatively marginal difference in sound and perceived recoil when compared to a caliber-specific suppressor. Many individuals accept this compromise because the cost of a thread adapter or universal mounting device is significantly lower than that of a new, dedicated suppressor for each gun they own.

Mounting Solutions

Each caliber has its own standardized thread pitch, so direct-thread suppressors must be paired with a thread adapter to fit a large can on a small-caliber firearm. This is still a perfectly viable option, but there's also an easier alternative for attaching your suppressor.

In recent years, the suppressor market has adapted to the needs of the consumer by introducing several highly functional muzzle devices that interface directly with suppressors for a seamless installation experience. These mounts take out much of the guess work of matching a suppressor with different adapters to account for the variance in thread pitch.

Multi-Caliber Suppressors

Advancements in suppressor technology have made it possible to own a single, modular suppressor that can be fine tuned to work with multiple pistol and rifle calibers. This option is perfect for shooters who only want to purchase one suppressor for all their guns, but don't want to sacrifice performance.
