Hailing from the era of metal frame Wonder Nines, Smith & Wesson's 3rd Gen handguns are among the most iconic hammer fired semi-auto pistols ever created. Smith & Wesson developed dozens of variants for the popular 5900 and 4500 series, ranging from practical to niche and even a little weird - which also makes these pistols insanely collectible in today's market.
The incredible 5906, 4506, and 3913 pistols from Smith & Wesson's 3rd generation of steel or aluminum frame semi-autos stand out as some of the best double / single action handguns in the world. Whether you need a full size duty gun or a slim concealed carry piece, it's tough to beat these rugged yet affordable stalwarts.
And while the aforementioned models are among the most popular 3rd Gen pistols, tons of other Smith & Wesson variants can still be purchased used in 2024. The 6906 is to the 5906 what the Glock 19 is to the Glock 17, while the 4516 is a more compact version of the beefy 4506 pistol with a bobbed hammer. Then there are the more budget-oriented models like the Smith & Wesson 910 and 915, which utilize the same magazine as the 5904 / 5906.
Smith & Wesson 3rd Gen pistols are highly sought after because of their excellent utility as defensive firearms in addition to their value as collectors' items. For many shooting enthusiasts, these handguns are mechanically interesting (particularly because of the myriad variants) and represent an important chapter in firearms history.
Compared to other famous Wonder Nines of the late 80s and 90s, Smith & Wesson 3rd Gen pistols are relatively inexpensive and are not cost-prohibitive for new gun owners or Smith & Wesson fans looking to expand their collection without breaking the bank. They also possess that indescribable cool factor that makes them stand out in any gun safe or display case.
At least part of the Smith & Wesson 3rd Gen pistols' immense popularity can be attributed to television and film. Whether it was Vic Mackey in The Shield or Denzel Washington in Training Day, many iconic characters have carried these strikingly bold handguns on screen. Life imitates art just as much as art imitates life.
Smith & Wesson's 3rd Gen pistols are also great options for concealed carry. In fact, some members of the Classic Firearms team have been know to EDC a 5906 on occassion, or to bring out a 4506 during the colder winter months. If you like interesting guns steeped in history or if you're looking for an excellent DA / SA pistol for selft defense, make 2024 the year that you pick up a 3rd Gen - you won't regret it.
