The holiday shopping season is upon us, and some great gifts are overlooked year after year due to hundreds of years of a very strong superstition. I am sure that you have heard that if you give a knife as a gift, it will sever the bonds between the giver and the receiver, and if married, it will sever the bonds of love. Everyone needs a really good pocket knife, but most won't spend the money to get the one that they really want. That would make getting the exact knife on someone's Christmas list a true surprise! No one ever expects to get a knife for Christmas because of this legend. After all, who would want an unlucky gift like that! This superstition is so believed around the world that ancient high ranking courts tried to find a solution to mitigate the curse. They worked so that knives could be given as a gift with a clear conscience by the giver, and their decided solution for the situation became a tradition and makes it acceptable to give knives as gifts even today. What is the logic behind this solution? Well, in many cultures around the world, coins are treasured and are a symbol of good luck. Even here in the U.S., we consider pennies to be good luck. But it goes deeper than that. The receiver of the gift can symbolically buy the knife from the gifter for the coin that is included in the gift's box. Therefore, the knife is not "given" to the recipient, it is purchased by the recipient. As a matter of fact, to this very day, the Japanese knife-maker Masakage puts a five-yen coin in the boxes that the knives are packaged in. All of that being said, let's go Christmas shopping for everyone on your list (including yourself :)). There is a knife for everyone out there and it can be daunting to pick out the perfect one. There are serrated blades, spear points, drop points, tanto, to name a few, and then of course there are hunting knives, fishing knives, tactical knives, rescue knives, utility knives, camping knives, cooking knives, and so on and so on. You get the point. Select knives that you know that your friend or loved one can use, whether it is for everyday carry, for a hobby, or for protection. I will try to help out as well, so here are just a few of Classic Firearms outstanding selection of folding knives.
