WHAT IS IT? Vertical foregrips are currently one of the most popular accessories for AR-15's. Although they were never intended for civilian use at all, we put them on our ARs, mostly as a stabilizing tool. Originally, fore grips were developed as far back as the early 1900s exclusively for submachine guns. Designed to keep the hot barrel away from combat soldiers' exposed hands, as well as to keep the muzzle from climbing by pulling it down during fully automatic firing. In the mid-1990s, special operation forces began to use SOPMODS. Special Operations Peculiar Modification Kit. This is an accessory system for the M4A1 carbine CQBR, the FN SCAR. MK17/18, HK416. It includes commercial off-the-shelf tactical accessories including various optics, lights, forearms, lasers, sights, suppressors, multiple rail systems, as well as military-specific attire like the M203 9" barrel grenade launcher. Specifically related to the content of this article, one of the items that were issued to Special OPs, was a Knights Armament forward grip. The SOPMOD kits allow soldiers to adjust their rifles to the mission requirement, and to configure their rifles per their personal preference. The foregrip was originally placed in these kits for not what you think. It was actually included to mitigate the problem with forward rails being overcrowded with other accessories. In addition to being able to hold their rifle correctly with the foregrip and all of the other attachments, soldiers still reaped the benefit of control during automatic fire and heat exposure from the barrel.

HOW WE CAN USE THE VERTICAL FOREGRIP

Although it really doesn't serve the exact purpose in our civilian world as it does in the military, there is still use for vertical foregrips on our AR-15's. Have rails, will fill them! Some of us love our accessories and swear by their ability to make us better shooters. Remember that your firearm is an extension of you. If you need to see a little better, light up your target, see in the dark, throw a red dot, calculate fall, or control your rifle a little better, there is an accessory for it. Most likely you will use your foregrip to provide stability when seating the rifle into your shoulder pocket or by giving your support hand an area to index on the fore-end. I don't believe in adding a foregrip or any other accessory for that matter, just for looks. If you are going to add it, use it. Know how to use your accessory to make it work with your rifle and your shooting style.
