WHAT IS MIL-SURP

Mil-Surp is simply an abbreviated version of Military Surplus. Military Surplus is authentic military gear that the Department of Defense or other Government Agencies no longer need for their service or current missions. Mass quantities of war-time supplies were manufactured to outfit the troops in the last century's wars. As missions, threats, technology, and battle plans change and evolve, the military updates the troops and their tactical defenses with the most current, high quality, and technologically advanced gear. That means that items and gear that were manufactured for previous missions, sometimes used and sometimes not, become obsolete. Those items then become Military Surplus. Military Surplus is not only sold by the United States Military. All nations produce gear for their defenses, and Mil-Surp from other countries is as available to the public for purchase as U.S. Mil-Surp.

WHY DOES THE MILITARY SELL THESE ITEMS

Selling off Military Surplus benefits the United States in many ways. For the U.S. Department of Defense, the surplus takes up much-needed space. Because of this, the items that are no longer needed or are obsolete to the forces are auctioned off. To the Department of Defense, space is more valuable than the items that are taking up the area. Auctioning off the surplus items not only frees up space, it saves the Government the expenses of maintenance and storage of items that will likely never be used again. As well as benefiting the Department of Defense, auctioning of Military Surplus helps out our National Debt. According to the Stars and Stripes publication, in the last decade since military surplus auctions went on-line, they have generated almost a billion dollars for the United States Treasury.

WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT MILITARY SURPLUS

Military Surplus is AWESOME! I could go on and on about the history of the items, especially the firearms. I could also go on and on about modern-day uses and the relevance that Military Surplus still has for hunters, collectors, survivalists, preppers, and home defense. But for now let's talk about quality. The quality of anything good enough to be issued to our troops, especially on the battlefield, is nothing less than top-notch. This unsurpassed quality, reliability, and durability is available for you to purchase. The research and manufacture of items that the Military uses to protect the Homeland often result in over-engineered products. Over-engineering means that the likelihood of failure is almost null. There is no room for failures or sub-standard protective and defensive products when engaged in a conflict. We know that the quality is above standard, but the price point of military surplus products is ridiculous. And we mean ridiculous in a good way, because the prices are flippin' unbelievable! Where, in the manufacturing markets, can you find the bonafide quality of products manufactured for the military at such an incredibly low price? No-where.

OK, JUST A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

When I think of Military Surplus, I automatically think of Lee-Enfield Rifles, called Enfields
for short. The mass manufacturing of these quality rifles made them one of the most widely used bolt-action military rifles in the world, only surpassed by the Model 1898 Mauser. Repeating rifles that could fire full-powder cartridges were coming to the forefront in the late 19th century. Lee-Enfields origins began when they started producing this state-of-the-art rifle. This iconic British rifle rifle was around for many wars, and left a mark everywhere that the British troops landed. Lee-Enfield Rifles are known and used all over the world. To this day, Canadians give Enfields to the rural northern-most militiamen known as the Canadian Rangers.
Have you ever held history in the palm of your hand? I can only imagine where my Enfield has been. Was it in a war? Who carried this rifle, and what country issued my rifle to its troops? How did it get to America, to me in a small town in North Carolina, are all questions that I have while I am cleaning or shooting my .303 caliber Enfield. I cannot put into words what it feels like to own my very own rifle as a living piece of history. "Private Frank Richards of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers used the Lee-Enfield in the First Battle of Ypres in the autumn of 1914. His unit was advancing by platoons across open fields when they took rifle fire from a wooded area 600 yards ahead. The platoon went into a prone firing position and opened fire with their Lee- Enfields. Soon a group of Germans began advancing toward the British, who poured fire into them. Richards recalled "We had our rifles resting on the bank - and it was impossible to miss at that distance. We had downed half a dozen men before they realized what was happening; then they commenced to jump back into the trench - but we bowled them over like rabbits-. We had expended our magazines, which held ten rounds-there wasn't a live enemy to be seen and the whole affair had lasted half a minute." I found the above excerpt from the archives of the National Interest web-site. My mind fills with visions of troops dressed in khaki uniforms on open fields of battle. Scared young men whose country's pride and defense meant more to them than their very own life. It is funny how that aspect hasn't changed at all from then to now. God Bless Our Soldiers!
