The Springfield Armory DS Prodigy is a brand new double-stack 1911 chambered in 9mm with a capacity of 17 rounds. Upon its release, online and brick-and-mortar retailers quickly sold out of inventory, proving Springfield’s latest effort a huge success.

Moreover, due to its premium features and accessible price point, the Prodigy has completely disrupted the handgun market despite existing in a niche traditionally dominated by a handful of well-established companies.

The message from Springfield is resoundingly clear - there will always be room for innovation, even with a design as classic and timeless as the 1911.

A Brief History Of The Double-Stack 1911

In 1990, Para Ordnance introduced a first-of-its-kind double stack 1911 to the market. The P14 pistol boasted a capacity of 14+1 rounds of .45 ACP, nearly double that of the standard M1911.

Other manufacturers (such as Rock Island, Nighthawk, and Staccato) began developing their own double-stack variants of the 1911. The light, crisp trigger paired with phenomenal ergonomics and capacity enticed many enthusiasts, as well as competitive shooters.

Many prior iterations of the double-stack 1911 were quite expensive. Given the cost, as well as its weight and size, many argued that the platform was better suited for a race gun or range toy than a serious EDC firearm. Now, that has changed.

The DS Prodigy Sets A New Standard

Springfield is well known for the quality of its single-stack 1911s, ranging from custom builds to more budget-friendly models. Perhaps it was inevitable  that they would develop a lightweight double-stack pistol available for merely half the cost of competing offerings.

But the price tag is not the only attractive feature the DS Prodigy has to offer. It is milled for a red dot optic and sports an accessory rail that can host any number of light / laser modules. The grip texture is aggressive yet not uncomfortable against bare skin.

Magazines & Accessories

The pistol ships with a 17rd flush-fit magazine and a 20rd extended magazine, but can accept most other double-stack 1911 magazines (Staccato, Taran Tactical, etc.) Accessories are plentiful and readily available - seldom the case with new releases.
