Why Carry A Double / Single Action Revolver

Benefits Of Revolvers For EDC

Revolvers are generally less prone to jam and are capable of firing more powerful rounds than most modern auto-loading handguns. Additionally, they can be discharged with the barrel pressed flush against an assailant during a struggle, since (unlike semi-auto pistols) they cannot be forced out of battery. These qualities are extremely attractive in a defensive firearm designated for concealed carry, especially considering that the majority of civilian shootings occur within seven yards.

In a traditional double / single action configuration, revolvers also offer second strike capability in case of a light primer strike, with the added benefit of rotating the cylinder to a fresh round before attempting to fire the same cartridge again. This also allows you to continue putting shots on target without needing to diagnose and clear feed-related malfunctions that can occur with auto-loading handguns.

Are There Any Drawbacks?

The obvious concern with using revolvers for concealed carry is reduced capacity compared to semi-auto pistols, as most wheel guns only hold five or six rounds. However, increased ballistic performance helps to compensate for the lower round count. Factor in the revolver's enhanced utility for close-quarters shooting and it becomes clear why many individuals continue to choose them for EDC.

Best DA / SA Revolvers For Concealed Carry

For concealed carry applications, most firearms instructors recommend models chambered for .357 Magnum / .38 Special with a barrel length between 2.25 and 3 inches. These features offer a solid balance of firepower, shootability, and concealment with recoil that is manageable for the average shooter. Here are some of the best options available in today's market.

Rossi RP63

The robust Rossi RP63 revolver is a solid entry-level choice for shooters on a budget. It features a ramped front sight blade for a snag-free draw and a full underlug barrel for mitigating felt recoil. With rounded rubber grips and a smooth trigger pull, this revolver is as concealable as it is reliable.

Colt King Cobra Carry

By far one of our best-selling concealed carry revolvers, the upgraded Colt King Cobra Carry utilizes a durable heavy-duty frame and a 2-inch barrel. This combination provides excellent concealment without compromising shootability, as the stainless steel construction helps absorb the substantial recoil of even the most potent magnum loads.

Chiappa Rhino 30DS Nickel

The Rhino 30DS is one of the best options available to shooters in 2024 because every aspect of this revolver is designed to enhance comfort and handling. It fires from the bottom of the cylinder and has a much lower bore axis for increased control, plus the aluminum alloy frame makes the 30DS model incredibly lightweight and easy to carry. Additionally, the Rhino's hexagonal barrel and low-profile fiber optic front sight also reduce the likelihood of printing or snagging on the draw.
