Blog Featured Image - How Often Should You Clean Your Gun

Do You Need To Clean Your Gun Every Time You Use It?

Here are just a few of the factors that affect when you should clean your gun to ensure it functions reliably:

  • Frequency and round count of range trips
  • The type of ammunition used
  • Model of firearm
  • The firearm’s intended purpose i.e., personal protection?
  • How recently the gun was cleaned

As a general rule, modern firearms using modern ammunition do not necessarily need to be cleaned after each use. Some guns (like 1911s) may require more regular cleaning and lubrication and it is not recommended to let any gun sit dirty for more than a few months.

Cleaning Habits For EDC Firearms

One caveat - maintenance standards of firearms designated for duty use or personal protection should be higher. Guns that are part of your everyday carry system should be kept in pristine working order because it is imperative that they function flawlessly every time.

In other words, if there is one firearm you clean every time you shoot a box of target loads, let it be your EDC pistol that may save your life in a self defense encounter.
